We’re on round two of the tooth fairy since my 6-year-old finally has a loose tooth. We’re totally late in this category, my kids get so mad that they are the last ones to loose a tooth! I remember when my oldest was close to losing her first tooth, she actually had a few friends who got $20 bucks from the tooth fairy. I was horrified! That was obviously pre-recession and I’m pretty sure the parents had a few cocktails the night of the tooth fairy visit and only had a twenty in their wallets! And so their tooth fairy expectation was quite high! Ours is a little different.
Lucky for me, I’m a tiny bit of a pack rat, but only with sentimental stuff. My tooth fairy left me rare coins – a half dollar, a Susan B Anthony dollar, even a $2 bill. These rare treats were cherished and I never felt like I could spend them. So 30 years later, I still have them (good Lord, I’m an old goat!). I’ve given 6 of my coins to my oldest. I think I only have two left stashed in the back of my drawers. I keep telling myself that I’m going to get more coins from the bank. That has been on my to-do list for a year now and I better get on it since I have round two coming fast! Our tooth fairy always leaves sparkles by the pillow and tooth box to leave her mark (I highly recommend a tooth box since these teeth are TINY and you may never find them under the pillow! I got mine for $5 at Toys & Co in Cotswold). The bummer about starting this tradition is if you are ever out of town for the tooth fairy visit. And you can bet this has happened to me! When we got that phone call (we had a sitter for the weekend), we knew we had to jack up the tooth fairy stash and leave $5 – we had no rare coins and certainly no access to sparkles (aka glitter). I could hear the disappointment in my daughter’s voice the next morning. She said, yeah, the tooth fairy didn’t even leave her magic dust. She could have cared less that she got a 300% raise!
So I’m asking you Smarties what your tooth fairy leaves these days? Ours leaves two coins (usually totaling $2) and I’m thinking maybe $5 for molars since those come out when the kids are around 12. What are your tooth fairy traditions?

Our tooth fairy left $10 or the first tooth and $5.00 for each since then.
This post is so timely! Jake is a few wiggles away from losing his first tooth and couldn't be more excited! I can't wait to hear what all your little Smarties get from the tooth fairy. My question is — what do you put the tooth in? I'm afraid it will get lost just by itself under the pillow — where is a good place to pick up a cute little tooth box or special tooth sack or pillow?
I had to pull a quick one just this morning. when Annie woke up and said ~ Mom, the tooth fairy took my tooth but didn't leave me any money! I quickly hid a $5 bill in my hand and pulled some other pillows off her bed to magically reveal the money the tooth fairy left!! Whew! That was a close one! One special time, I found a tiny handmade fairy pin in Blowing Rock. It is really cute and I paid way too much for it, but she was delighted to get that special tooth fairy pin!
$5 for the first…$1 there after in our home of three!
$1 per tooth at our house!
We leave $1.25 — just enough for a purchase plus tax from the dollar store the next day!
I'd go broke if our tooth fairy was forking out $5 and $10 for teeth! We've got 3 kids that are tooth losing age!! And when the dentist pulls 4 at one time? Hello, maybe I could get a loan from BoA? First tooth gets a $5 and everything after that is $1. AND the tooth fairy spots coming when you turn 10 years old.
Great timing!! We just found my son's first loose tooth today and he is thrilled, all because the tooth fairy comes. Thanks for this timely post!
Our tooth fairy leaves $1…..and I have a totally cute tooth pillow that the child can leave the tooth in and $1 will fit in folded…..I was totally busted when my 10 yr old found my stash of his teeth in a drawer along with the pillow…but he still wants the $1 so he plays along 🙂
$5 for the first tooth, $2 for all the rest, cute tooth pillows at Pigtails and Crewcuts with a little pocket for the tooth, but a little plastic ziplock bag would probably work just as weel
My daughter has a pillow that has a small pocket, so we use that for her. My son just uses a baggie. They heard from a friend of their's if you write a letter to the tooth fairy requesting to keep your tooth, she will let you. So now mine always write a letter to keep their teeth, kinda good for me not to have to keep up with hiding all their teeth. But we get $5 for the first tooth and $2 for each after.
wow- teeth are expensive these days. : ) I like the $1.25 idea so there is enough for a purchase at the Dollar Store. fun!
My kids are too young for the tooth fairy, but MY tooth fairy left teeny tiny notes with her teeny tiny hand writing in the tooth fairy pillow on my bed. I still have them all. Just make sure not to use that stationery for ANYTHING else. That is how the tooth fairy got busted (and EB and Santa- all in the same conversation).
How timely! We lost our first tooth this week. So Monday after work, I had to do the mad dash for a tooth fairy pillow. I found a pretty satin one at Alphabet Soup ($22, but I was desperate and it is really nice). The tooth fairy brought 3 gold $1 coins. I am thinking subsequent teeth get 1 or 2 of the $1 coins. They fit perfectly in the tiny pouch on the pillow.
We leave a glass of water by the bed and the tooth fairy dips her wing in it. My daughter can't wait to see what color it will be! Thank goodness I still have plenty of food coloring from making all that playdo in preschool. As for money – $5 for the first and $2 thereafter.
we leave a buck or 4 quarters. An accidental tradition began this year.. the tooth fairy takes the tooth, then hides it somewhere in the house to be found, who knows when. This came about b/c I was cleaning out a nightstand drawer in front of my son when we found one of his teeth from a previous tooth fairy visit. He looked at me with great surprise, so I just said, "Hmm, wonder how that got in there?" And he came up with the answer…."She must not take my teeth. Maybe she hides them."
I ordered this set from: http://www.toothfairysecrets.comMy daughter LOVES to get these unusual looking coins from other countries from her tooth fairy. Each coin comes with a note from the tooth fairy explaining who she is to the children in that country and what the tradition is when they lose a tooth. So, it's educational as well. I also give her a couple of gold dollars or a $2 bill.
OMG, LOVE these stories of how you Smarties get creative (and educational with this). My kids are too young for loosing teeth yet but I can tell you I'll be incorporating the water for wing dipping by the bed and looking into the coins from different countries with tiny notes. This is GREAT stuff yall!!! Thanks
