We are coming up on the official start of summer and that means fun in the sun and time to sport our casual and cute apparel. That being said, when you’re expecting, it can be challenging to take advantage of the trends. Our friends, Natalie and Casey, at Buttoned Up Style, a style consultation firm in New York City are here to help us navigate the ins and outs of summer fashion. They have highlighted some of the hottest summer trends and how to translate them to preggo-approved wear. There are so many super-chic stores (physical and online) to help you look your best while you boost your belly.
The first trend that is all the rage is color blocking. Using bold pops of colors is a great way to draw the eye in to certain areas. This trend is also helpful for post-partum fashion, as you can use darker colors to help make certain areas appear smaller. You can mix bright tops, like this Gap Pure Body Tank with a pair of colored jeans or a colored maxi skirt. With the summer heat and humidity fast approaching, maxi skirts and dresses are a must!
Keeping on the trend of color, a super fun summer trend is colored denim. It seems like all the stores are offering a rainbow of jeans. A Pea in the Pod is now offering a variety of denim from red to purple to teal. To help balance these gems out, pair it with a neutral top.
Summer is the perfect time to for a maternity dress. It’s simple, comfy and they’re so cute to help you sport that growing bump. There are so many options to choose from for different occasions, whether it be the beach, work or a wedding – there are options for all. I always favored the maxi dress during my pregnancy, which is a hot style right now. You can find these at just about any maternity outlet. I really like the Olian Maternity Blue Geo Print Brooke Maxi Dress from Pickles and Ice Cream – its bold blue and fun pattern stopped me in my tracks. Another great option is ASOS Maternity Exclusive Dress. Not only is the color so light and pretty, it will make any mama-to-be feeling beautiful!
Now, just because you’re pregnant (or not pregnant at the moment) doesn’t mean that the fashion stops with the clothes. Accessories are a great way to add flair to any ensemble. A chunky and colorful tribal necklace such as Bluma Project Kayah would be a great add-on to an outfit. Or, check out one of our local hot-spot’s fashion finds, the Harlow necklace from Towne & Reese. This is also one of the Bachelorette’s Emily Maynard’s favorite necklaces! That’s one mama with great style! Accessories, like necklaces, are a great way to draw the eyes up, should you be in that in-between time of either “I’m pregnant, not chubby” or “baby pooch leftover” (which is where I’m currently setting up camp).
Lastly, a great bag is a must have. Whether you’re toting anything from wipes to a wallet, Petunia Pickle Bottom line of bags have the greatest colors, patterns and function!
It’s such a different time than when our moms were pregnant. Gone are the muumuus and welcome are the mamas, hot mamas, that is. Be bold, be stylish and be confident. If you look good, you’ll feel great – so have fun with the summer styles! A special thanks to Buttoned Up Style for their summer survival fashion tips.
