OK, let me preface this with – YUCK! But since it’s lice season, I feel compelled to share this information with you in the event that you are faced with this annoying situation. Thanks to a few of my Smarty girlfriends who have had the misfortune of going through a household of lice, now we will all have a great resource so we are fully prepared for it and hopefully we can prevent it.
My friend raves about an amazing product called LICEKILLER. It is
a natural product with essential oils that are formulated to be highly effective and safe.They also have a laundry concentrate and home spray (that did not leave marks on fabric). Licekiller is by far the best multi-step product system. You have to tackle it or it will be back!
One thing many moms are emphatic about is not to use the drugstore products (RID) or prescriptions since they are pesticides and are not successful. This was particularly alarming to me because this is typically the first thing recommended by your elementary school and pediatrician.
The best way to be proactive in not getting lice is to regularly nit check with a nit comb. The best lice comb out there is the “Nit-Free Terminator” available on www.licekiller.com. It has coils indented in the comb that doesn’t pull hair out but thoroughly grasps the hair. As a preventive, my friend recommends Fairy Tales Rosemary Repel line of products. Do not wash your children’s hair everyday. Lice like clean hair so wash only a few times a week. One of my very anal girlfriends was appalled that I let Ansley go to school with just a headband. Baffled, I asked why the surprise? Her response, my daughter has had the “lice-do” ponytail for three years now! The following week, her son had nits. So if her family can get it, then we ALL can get it!
If you find lice in your child’s hair, the following tips are recommended:
-Use Lice Killer product and follow step-by-step instructions.
-Use a white plastic cup of water to rinse nit comb so you can see the nits & eggs. If you use a clear glass, you will see everything else through it.
-Search head in 1/2″ thick sections.
-Follow steps on licekiller.com for laundering and furniture sprays. These things live forever!
-Although embarrassing, email your child’s classmates and playmates so they can check for nits too. It’s much easier to catch it in the early stage.
It would be a good idea to go ahead and purchase the Lice Killer now so you have it on hand if your child gets lice. This is an incredibly time-consuming, frustrating process. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that this doesn’t happen to my household. But with four children, I have to think we will experience this at some point. And I am so not looking forward to it.

We use the Fairy Tales leave-in detangler hair spray in my house. My girls spray it on in the morning and when they return home from school. Though there have been lice outbreaks in their classes and amongst their friends, we have never had lice in our house. I highly recommend it. Before I was a stay at home mom, I was a teacher at a low income elementary school. Lice was rampant not because the students weren’t clean but because the parents didn’t treat the clothing, bookbags, sheets, towels, etc. I had students who missed weeks of school because of the infestation at their homes. Now, this is NOT to say that only low income families can get this…Lice LOVE clean hair! So what I learned as prevention so that I would never get it was to plaster my hair with hairspray. I never used products in my hair until lice season. The misconception is that dirty children get lice. Wrong, the kids that wash their hair daily get it so when other kids in your kids’ classrooms have it, be sure to put any kind of products in their hair; gel, hairspray, anything. I was lice free all seven years I taught by doing this trick and so were my colleagues!
This is about the BPA-free bottle issue from earlier posts…I’ve gone back to this post since so much about BPA free bottles has been in the news…I bought a Foogo sippy cup but then realized that the top is still plastic. How do I know it is BPA free? NOTHING on the packaging indicates that.
We went to New Zealand two summers ago and came home with head lice. It was truly one of the most time consuming frustrating times of our lives and with four children (only two infested thank goodness) we spent literally 8 weeks trying to rid our daughters of this horrible thing. We did all the over the counters, the mayo and peanut butter, all the old wives and everyone’s suggestion but the ONLY THING THAT WORKED WAS Head Lice Remedy http://www.headliceremedy.com It took three weeks of one night on and one night rest of this essential oil mix and babyoil. We had to liberally apply this to their heads and wrap their heads in cling film for the night. First thing in the morning we had to shampoo with Dawn liquid detergent (which dried out their scalps badly)and by day 22 we were infestation free! This is the only way to break the cycle and I swear by it. I hope I never have to go through that again.
