This is probably the most important decision of your pregnancy. You need to be comfortable with your provider, her style, her experience, credentials, etc.
Babycenter has a great article on the right questions to ask and how to go about your search. Carolinas Healthcare and Presbyterian Healthcare both have links to all of their providers for reference too. But I think your greatest tool is word-of-mouth and testimonials from friends and family who have first-hand experience with your doctors. Enter the wonderful loyal moms of Charlotte Smarty Pants! So I’m going to give you my experience with my super-cool, amazing OB/GYN who I’d love to be B/F/F with! And you post your provider in the comments section below so everyone in all areas of Charlotte can get great referrals.
My OB/GYN (now I’m proud to boast her as my GYN since I’m so done giving birth, thank you very much, now that I have four beautiful children:-), is Dr. Alyse Kelly-Jones with
Mintview Women’s Care. Actually, Dr. K-J is Jen B.’s doctor too – pretty sure I referred her! One of my girlfriends who happens to be a crazy UT Vols fan (love her despite this flaw:-) reluctantly told me about Dr. K-J because she is a proud UF Gator, as am I. We hit it off immediately and now 6 1/2 years later, she has delivered three of my four children. What I love about Dr. K-J is her laid-back demeanor and her commitment to her field of expertise. She is extremely passionate about all aspects of women’s care and it shows. Not only does she deliver a zillion babies, but she also coordinated the first Charlotte women’s triathlon, The Ramblin’ Rose 100, just to motivate women to get healthy. I’m actually kind of offended that I wasn’t one of the 129 women invited to participate in the inaugural race – maybe she was afraid I would beat her – ha, ha! Anyway, Dr. K-J worked with me with both pregnancies to try to strategically deliver my babies. For some reason, I was obsessed with having my primary doctor deliver for me. My first delivery with her was with my 4-year-old and after an appointment and a handy “stripping of my membranes”, my water broke at PF Chang’s in the middle of dinner! I called Dr. K-J at 10pm and she walked me through what I needed to do. You would think since that was my 2nd delivery, I would have been an old hat. But that water breaking really threw me off! I didn’t get take-out from PF Chang’s for months afterwards! Then with the twins, I was induced and what a beautiful delivery that was. I ended up delivering at 5:15pm and it just so happened that Dr. K-J was off duty at 5pm. So she actually hung around with us in our hospital room for 30 minutes after the twins were born (see attached photo). It was so cool and I was just so impressed that she spent this time with us after a long on-call day. Not to mention, my husband and I were both terrified for her to leave because we had no clue what we were going to do with these brand-new twins! You’ll be happy to hear that we figured it out pretty quickly!OK, your turn! We’d love your feedback on your favorite OB/GYN or midwife!

I adore all of the doctors at Charlotte OB/ GYN, particularly one of the NP’s, Jane Link. I started with her nine years ago at the Main location, and still see her when she works in the LKN office. All the doctors and nurses are great, their appointments run on time, and every doctor I met with during my pregnancy was wonderful.
I love everyone at Rankin Women’s Center with Presby. Dr. Bland did an amazing job with my emergency c-section & called me at home several times in the first weeks home. But, every doctor, nurse, technician we saw was impressive at their jobs & incredibly warm & attentive!
Because of various insurance changes, I’ve been to about 8 different OB/GYN practices in CLT over the past 10 years. After my first child and a disappointing experience with my practice at the time, i made the switch to Providence Women’s Care at the Presby Medical Tower. I could not be happier! Dr. Dehoff is my doctor and I adore him. But everyone there — from the front desk, to the nurses, insurance, and ultrasound are amazing. I’ve had 2 children under their care and am so grateful. The other doctors there are great, too. They each make every effort to be there to deliver their patients.
Dr Louise Rogers at Mintview is great!!! She delivered my son, even when not on call. Very down to earth, like Dr K-G.
Gotta second the Charlotte OB/GYN comment and particularly, Eleanor McCurdy. She is my main doctor, but I also love Dr. Makemson (sp?) and Dr. Wicker. Makemson is very quiet, but he was an amazing doctor during a mis-carriage I had this summer and Dr. Wicker actually delivered my daughter.
I am sure everyone has their favorite but I am surprise no one has mentioned Dr. Phil Solomon with Carmel OB/GYN. He is awesome, smart and has an excellent bedside manner. I have known him for a long time and I have seen him treat his newer patients just the same. He delivers at CMC Pinevlle(the best place) and Presby Matthews.
Does anyone know how to find a the best c-section doctor – if you know you are going to have one with subsequent pregnancies?
I love, love, love Dr. Nora Arronte at Providence Women’s care…all the docs there are great, including their newest, Dr. Gordon…she’s awesome. All the nurses are fab, and the ultrasound tech Marcie is a hoot. I had an emergency C-section with Dr. Morris, and having never met him before, he was SO great…such a great practice…highly rec. them!!
I love Dr.Stein and Dr. Gourley at Charlotte OB/GYN. Dr. Stein did my C-section, which was last minute, but she did an awesome job and remained calm and very supportive the entire time. Dr. Gourley is a wonderful Dr. as well. When I got my first ultrasound he quoted part of the 139th Psalm which talks about how God knits the baby in its mother’s womb and how it is fearfully and wonderfully made. My husband and I were very touched by that experience.
I love the midwives at Charlotte ob/gyn, especially Lindsay Bashour. Haley and Kathy are great too.
I LOVE Dr. Bland at Rankins Women Center. He is so nice and so patient. He also called me at home during my pregnancy and afterwards, just to see how we were all doing. The whole practice is great.
Love Love Love Providence Women’s Care. I have high risk pregnancies and they are all wonderful. They spend lots of time with you and care for the patients. I love Dr. Morris and Dr. Dehoff! Dr. Morris is on the ad’s right now for Presby. You can tell you have a good doctor to when everyone at the hospital comments on your doctor and treats you so good!
I echo the comments on Providence Women’s Care. LOVE Dr. Morris and Dr. DeHoff. Dr. Morris delivered my son. I highly recommend them!!
Dr. DeHoff at Providence Women’s Care is so amazing. When I miscarried he said all the right words to comfort me, yet was also very professional. He treated me as if I was his only patient. The ultra sound tech, nurses, and staff are wonderful too.
Dr. Scott Schneider at Bradford Clinic on Providence Rd. is wonderful! I’ve been seeing him for 3 years now and he helped me through my first miscarriage and subsequent successful pregnancy(although he was out of town when the actual delivery happened). The nursing staff at Bradford is AWESOME too — very caring and compasionate. High marks for the entire staff at Bradford Clinic!!
I really liked Dr. Svendsen at Rankin Women’s Center as my primary, but ended up with Dr. Ward giving me an early c-section, but loved him too. Very glad to have gotten stitches instead of staples…didn’t even have to ask!If anyone’s in Lancaster, SC Dr. Helwig is really good there too – she’s pretty new there the past year or so.
Dr. K-J is my OB/GYN too and I was fortunate to have her deliver my baby too. She kept me relaxed and motivated me to deliver in about 15 minutes. She was so cool when she visited the next morning, too. I love that she has a laid-back demeanor, you don’t feel rushed and she talks to you as a person instead of a doctor–I actaully don’t get stressed when I have to go for my yearly physical and I HATE the pap smear and the blood work but she relaxes me.
Janice Naumann with Randolph OBGYN is fabulous. She delievered my twins and I think the world of her.
If you live in S. Charlotte– Pineville GYN/OB is wonderful. They’re actually in Ballyntine and deliver at CMC-P which is a fantastic facility. I used the midwives and had a great experience delivering my daughter.
I am also strangely obsessed with having my primary OB deliver my children and unfortunately, Dr. Gourley was in Israel when I was due. I pleaded with him (via email) to come back and deliver me, but I was blessed with the equally talented and wonderful Hansen-Linder who delivered our daughter. Dr. Gourley helped us through infertility which as many know can be lonely, sad and exhausting. After one appt. which I basically cried for 45 min. he sent me home with a prescription. It was passages from the Bible to comfort and strengthen me. I was so touched by his kindness. He is a gift.
For the person that asked about C-sections. I had an unplanned one done by Dr. Bland at Rankin. Like the other person who mention Ward/Svendson at Rankin, I also got stitches, not staples, without even requesting them. A year later, my scar is so light I really think at some point soon it will be unnoticeable. I have heard of other people going to Dr. Bland with a previous ugly C-section scar & him improving it greatly on their next c-section. Not that you should only look at the cosmetic aspect of a c-section, by all means you are in great hands with Dr. Bland & I love that although he went to Wake Forest undergrad he chose UNC Chapel Hill for Med School!
Eastover OB/gyn, Dr. Matkins. When I was looking, I asked labor and delivery nurses who they recommend–they said all the docs at Eastover are great. Dr. Matkins drew the short straw one day when I was first pregnant, and he was the doc that had to tell me, all was lost. He called me AT HOME that night just to see how I was doing. Three years later, we tried again, and poof, I got pregnant. I went early at 8 mos, and low and behold, he was the oncall and delivered me. He was coming off a 24 hour shift and delivered 6 babies prior to me, but stayed with me to the bitter end–at 7 a.m. , I asked him–who’s coming in after you–you should go home and he said no way, he was sticking with me! You just don’t get that any more! And three months later when I thought I had post p. depression, he sat in his office with me for over an hour helping me through it. He’s a father, he’s a great doctor and a great comfort. Highly recommend him.
I love Char OBGYN- everyone there has been amazing!!! I have almost met everyone, and they continue to amaze me with their “bedside manner”. They have all been more wonderful than I ever imagined they would be! There has only been one doctor that I didn’t “click” with (Dr. Wicker), but other people seem to love him so I will give him a second chance. : ) (I think he was having a bad day and his allergies were bothering him…)
LOVE LOVE LOVE Char OB/GYN…personally the midwives. I did not have a great experience at all with my first delivery (Northcross OB/GYN) and really wondered how women have more than one baby!!! I then switched practices afterward for my 2nd and 3rd births. Worlds apart…everything from the appointments, mannerisms, staff, and of course delivery. I know the first is truly your first and things do happen…I mean it is childbirth…but when everything is completely different, you have got to wonder how some practices remain.Cannot say enough about the dedication of the midwives!

Eastover OB/GYN at Morehead Medical Plaza (CMC-main) are wonderful. Along with the doctors the staff there are also awesome. I never had to wait in the waiting room for more than at most 10 minutes. Just a hint though make your appointment in the afternoon. Dr. Jain, Dr. Nicholson, Dr. Kalich, Dr. Lucas, and Dr. Fisher are some of my favorites!!
I love Dr. Bohmer at Rankin. My one sister see Dr. Bland and the other sees Dr. Svenson. We are all Rankin girls! I don’t think you can go wrong with Rankin Women’s Center. It is a busy practice though and sometimes you wait a while before an appointment.
Dr. K-G delivered my second son. LOVE HER!!!!
Can anyone recommend a doctor that is very familiar with endometriosis? I was diagnosed with it while going through fertility treatments in NY before having our twins and now that we have moved to Charlotte, I need a new doctor that can help me with some issues I am having. Just wondered if anyone knew of a doctor that was very familiar and helpful with endometriosis. Thank you in advance!
Dr. Morris is so wonderful, he spends time with you and actually listens! I came from Northcross OBGYN and then Huntersville OBGYN and it was NOT a good experience, you are lucky if the doctors remember you week to week and spend more than 2 minutes with you. Providence and Dr. Morris has been a real blessing!
Dr. Louise Rogers (Mintview) has been my gyn for years & now my OB. I have always loved her easy going demeanor & she's been great throughout my pregnancy. I'm trying to remain calm about the delivery of my baby, however, b/c the practice rotates so one of the 6 doctors at Mintview who delivers babies will be the one I get. I do, oddly enough, also know Dr. K-J as I was one of the women she pushed through the Ramblin Rose triathlon last fall! (which, on a side note, was a FABULOUS experience and one i highly recommend! Matter of fact, if i weren't due 9/22 I'd be doing the RR again this October!)Anyway, here's to hoping for a great labor & delivery nurse. And fingers crossed that either Dr. Rogers or Dr. K-J show up for my delivery. 🙂
I absolutely love Dr. Bessent from Northcross OBGYN. She was amazing throughout my pregnancy and was on call when my water broke. If you are looking for a great OBGYN with lots of knowledge, someone who can relate to those crazy pregnancy situations, someone who is a mother herself, then please go see Dr. Bessent. You will not be disappointed!
Forms Processing applications let you recognize forms filled in by hand in order to automate data entry tasks. Handprint recognition has come a long way in the past few years. Cost and complexity have gone down while accuracy gets increasingly higher. This has finally made this technology available to small and mid-sized businesses.
It seems like all of these are located in the Southern area of Charlotte. What about offices near Huntersville/Cornelius area? I have heard some negatives about Huntersville OBGYN…so am really hesitant to go there. Any help would be appreciated!
Hey, Nicky…Ashley H. here. As a fellow LKN mom I wanted to offer some recommendations for this area. I LOVE my OBGYN (Dr. Mark Peacock in Birkdale) but he's dropping his OB practice & just doing GYN. So I asked around with my trusted LKN mom friends. Some go down to Charlotte. Others see Dr. Little with Huntersville OBGYN, she supposedly has a great nurse practicioner too. My neighbor & friend, Teri, who is a nurse herself has this to say when I asked her…Dr. Stein at CMC-Huntersville office (she also has hours downtown) is part of the Charlotte OB/GYN group. I have been to many trying to find someone I like, she is good. One, she is female. So she has driven the Cadillac, not just worked on them. Second, she is a mom. Third, she is very bright and very personable. Most importantly, she values my opinions as a patient."How do you find them?" Answer: Trial and Error. Find an office that someone recommends, make an appointment, see if you like them. Remember, they can be a National Renowned Physician, but if they do not have the personality that you are looking for, they are not the one for you. Personal preference pays big in this personal area. Hope all this helps! thanks for reading and asking such great questions! Ashley
I go to Rankin Women's center and would highly recommend Dr. Ward. My first pregnancy ended with a stillbirth at full term and Dr. Ward was on-call that day and performed the c-section. Once I got pregnant again, I switched over to him and he was nothing short of wonderful during the second pregnancy. Some of the other doctors at Rankin can be quite insensitive, particuarly Yavorski and Bland, but Dr. Ward's concern and sensitivity has been above and beyond!
Has anyone had a doctor perform an unnecessary c-section? Possibly to get paid more money for performing a c-s? My doctor used a hook, even though my water clearly broke hours earlier and I was in good labor, 6cm and 80% effaced? Everything was fine before the hook and then the baby went into decelleration which required an Emergency C-S. I'm not sure what to do and I don't want to mention any names until I know what he did. Is there anyone out there that has any idea or has been to one of these doctors in Charlotte where they felt rather violated?
