In 2011, we set out to create something special, a unique event to bring awareness to the miracles that take place every day in our own community. We wanted to use our story to bring the community together and raise funds for the Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery at Levine Children’s Hospital (LCH) and the Charlotte Fetal Care Center, both places where we, personally, witnessed miracles.
In June of 2011 “In the NIC of Time” came to life. We prayed that the community would share our passion and give back to such a worthy cause. We were overwhelmed with the response. Over 225 people attended the inaugural event which was held at the beautiful Duke Mansion and featured live music, delicious food, and a one-of-a-kind cake replica of Levine Children’s Hospital. We all believed we were part of something much larger than just our story and our friends.
We were right – this community is amazing!
Thanks to the generosity of hundreds of donors and sponsors, we were able to present a check for over $52,000 to Levine Children’s Hospital and the Charlotte Fetal Care Center. We hope our story can continue to inspire others to join our cause. We know there are countless stories of hope emerging from Levine Children’s Hospital every day. We want “In the NIC of Time” to serve as a platform from which we can share those stories and provide the necessary funds for research and care in the future.

Who do proceeds benefit?
Proceeds from The Cottie & Cake Fund, benefit neonatal care and prenatal research at the Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery at Levine Children’s Hospital and the Charlotte Fetal Care Center, respectively.
What is the NICN at LCH?
The Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery (NICN) at Levine Children’s Hospital is one of the most comprehensive neonatal care facilities in the region. In 2011, it received the Gold Seal of Approval from the Joint Commission and was the only facility of its kind in the nation to have this distinction. The NICN features a 53 bed unit and includes: the region’s only neonatal surgery program, the region’s only ECMO heart and lung bypass capability, and an active pediatric medical research program including participation in clinical trials in neonatology. Funds from 2011 “In the NIC of Time” event benefitted the NICN at Levine Children’s Hospital by dedicating seed funding for strategic space planning for the entire unit.
What is the Charlotte Fetal Care Center?
The Charlotte Fetal Care Center is one of just a handful of centers in the country. Led by Dr. Courtney Stephenson, The Charlotte Fetal Care Center, along with the Women’s Institute at Carolinas Medical Center, provides pre-natal care and treatment for some of the most high-risk pregnancies, especially those involving multiple fetuses. Through the generous donation from The Cottie & Cake Fund, the Charlotte Fetal Care Center is able to embark on cutting edge research, tracking outcomes for patients treated at the center. Data will be gathered and entered by a trained clinical professional ensuring proper tracking of information for research purposes.
Why be a sponsor?
The miracles that happen each day at Levine Children’s Hospital would not happen without the support of philanthropy. You never know when your children or the children you love may need these amazing facilities and medical expertise. There are benefits to becoming an event sponsor. Please refer to the sponsorship opportunities to find the right fit for your business or family.
Is my donation tax deductible?
All contributions are tax deductible in accordance with IRS regulations. The estimated value received for food and beverages associated with the event is $65 per person, reducing the tax-deductible amount of the charitable contribution. Carolinas HealthCare Foundation is a 501(c)3 organization.
