Staycation!!! We have added this new pastime to our spring break & summer line up.
Whether it is the economy of just the desire to be close to home, many families are spending more time enjoying their own backyard. Here are a few ideas to consider for Spring Break or a designated week during the summer.
Great Wolf Lodge
Have you checked out Great Wolf Lodge? Many people travel to stay at this resort from states away. It is about 20 minutes from my front door. It has an amazing water park for kids of all ages. In the past, they have run specials for local families to enjoy the day but you may need to pay for a night to enjoy the property. If so, you get two days worth of water park thrills for one night. It is far less expensive than a week at the beach.
Plaza Fiesta
Plaza Fiesta in Fort Mill boasts the biggest indoor playground in the Southeast. I have been told by many of my friends that it is incredibly clean and safe for toddlers on up. Admission is $4 per child and has times available 7 days a week.
Carowinds
If you are a rollercoaster junkie, you can always add a visit to Carowinds to the roster. Especially, for older kids, you can enjoy the day together without cell phones and other interruptions. We have an annual tradition of taking our 13 year old to a different park every year. It is one of the few times he isn’t as embarrassed by our presence. He enjoys the experience as much as his father.
Tweetsie Railroad
Tweetsie Railroad is a fun adventure for the little train lover in your life. We took our four year old boys for their birthday and they loved it. It actually snowed in October. They are already selling their popular “Day out with Thomas” tickets for June. Think Wild West train ride with a Carnival experience added in for excitement.
Latta Plantation
The Latta Plantation outside of Huntersville offers the nature center, the equestrian center and the raptor center. For the nature lover in your family, there is something for everyone.
Mini-road trip to Atlanta
If you don’t mind a mini adventure, you can add a small road trip and head to Atlanta. We recently took our kids to the Atlanta Aquarium. It was so much fun. They could have stayed for two days and didn’t understand why we needed to come home. Atlanta also has a very nice zoo if you need to see a few more animals to make the drive worth the effort. I also discovered one more extra at our hotel. We decided to stay on the north side of Atlanta, as this was a short trip. We were thinking easy in, easy out. Our hotel was near the American Girl store. They offer a special American Girl weekend package complete with everything pink, from the doll bed you keep to matching robes. It also includes breakfast and cookies to the room. My daughter and I had many discussions about planning our next trip with our girlfriends.
Staycation is really just about making the most of time with your family. It can be a party anywhere you decide to spend time together. Just use your creativity and check out all the local opportunities at your disposal. We live in an awesome part of the country.
