When he was done…he didn’t ask if he was in trouble, he asked if he was funny.

My middle child Colin is the exact opposite of my daughter. He has never had an interest in drawing, painting, coloring or any toy that required fine motor skills. At his four year check up my pediatrician suggested we keep a close eye on it. I guess he wasn’t exactly up to speed. We worked with him a little over the summer, but he had no interest. We stressed. We backed off. We made sure his pre-k teachers knew our concerns going in and that he tended to shut down when asked to perform.

Two weeks ago we had his conference. I was informed that my darling angel was only familiar with five letters in the alphabet. Not shocking, they are the five letters in his name. We came up with action plans to engage. Less focus on scissors and more on tearing paper. Less on paint brushes and more on finger painting. We needed to strengthen the muscles in his hands.

He’s my second child. I know better. I know not to spend a lot of time worrying. My children always make it through whatever little obstacle keeps me up at night and has me researching every thing I can. But I’m a mom that worries.

Today Colin decided to let me know how far his fine motor skills had come in two weeks while I was folding a load of laundry….
