I can remember my very first taste of a Honeybell tangelo (seriously, when you try one you will not forget your first taste either – they are SO good). I was at the Farmer’s Market on Ocean Drive in Vero Beach, Florida. We were living there at the time. It was early January and I was 3 months pregnant with twins. Funny thing, I married the son of a former citrus grove owner and my pregnancy craving was oranges🍊. I couldn’t get enough of them. I loaded up on navels. It was a miracle my twins weren’t born orange. I ate them for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Okay, I digress – back to my memory of honeybells…
Growing up in Vero Beach, I was familiar with Navel and Valencia oranges. I had never come across a Honeybell before. It was not until January 2012 — OHHHH EMMMMM GEEEEEE — Poinsettia Groves was handing out slices and it stopped me dead in my tracks. It was the sweetest, juiciest orange I had ever tasted. First, I thought my hormones were playing tricks on me. I had grown up with orange trees in my yard. We lived in an area where citrus trees were everywhere. Nope, this was the real deal and this particular orange was something special! I had my husband taste one. He thought it was a Valencia, but it couldn’t be. It was too early. Valencia is in season starts in March. That day we learned about the Honeybell. January is now my favorite month – all because it is Honeybell season.
