Goal setting can be tough for even adults – but there’s no question that when you set measurable goals, you are infinitely more prepared for all that life can throw at you. This rings true for our kids, too, especially right now when so much may seem out of their control.
Setting goals teaches our kids to take responsibility for their own behaviors and learning. It also promotes a can-do attitude that attracts friends and peers to them in ways that “I can’t” won’t. And, most importantly, it is a powerful lifelong habit that will help them immeasurably as they matriculate through school and, eventually, work.
At Kumon we believe there are four steps to help your child set goals – and reach them!
1. Let them Choose their Goals with leading questions.
Open-ended questions like “What’s one thing you wish you could do or know that you don’t right now?” or “What would you do if you knew that you couldn’t fail?” help put into words things they might not have thought of previously.
2. Talk about why this goal is important?
What is the goal’s purpose and what value does it bring your child?
3. Break the goal down into smaller, more achievable steps.
It’s much easier to walk 100 feet than take one big jump – and your child is more likely to succeed. This is one of the ways that Kumon really helps its students. We break down the math and reading concepts into smaller bites – things that our students can absorb and put into practice before leaping into another area.
4. Talk about obstacles to attaining their goals.
The truth is very little goes smoothly, and the sooner children understand that, the easier it will be for them to change course and try a different way. Again, at Kumon, we teach them strategies for reading and math so they can use different tactics to derive the answer.
Whether your child is an avid reader, a musician, an athlete or a creator – goals help them get to, and surpass, their dreams. We can help!
