The U.S. National Whitewater Center isn’t just for kayaking lessons and mountain biking! During the warm spring and summer months in Charlotte, you can get your yoga fix there every day if you want to, in a beautiful outdoor setting on the Catawba River. – for free! From May through September (and during select festivals), the Whitewater Center offers daily yoga classes, and as many as three of them on Saturdays, at no charge. (Other than parking, which costs $6 daily or $60 for an annual pass. Just bring your own mat!)
The lone exception to the free-of-charge yoga slate is the crown jewel of their schedule: SUP Yoga. Once each month, on the first Sunday of the month from May through September, the Whitewater Center offers the chance to practice yoga on a stand-up paddle board on the calm flatwater of the Catawba River. An activity pass is required , costing $30, as is an advance reservation for the SUP equipment and/or anchor. For more information, call Guest Services at 704-391-3900.
Another great option is to couple your yoga class with live music, during Whitewater Center’s River Jam series. The River Jam runs all summer long and during festivals with concerts on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights featuring music genres ranging from roots rock, Americana, bluegrass, folk, and funk. Yoga classes start at 6:30 p.m. followed by live music at 7 p.m.
Daily check-in for yoga is at South Ridge and for SUP Yoga, the River Center. For more information, visit the Whitewater Center’s website. Here’s a breakdown of the weekly schedule:
