A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to visit a few new Sabor Latin Grill locations via the LYNX Blue Line. Such a fun combination – I bet you didn’t even know that were four different Sabor locations along our light rail – I sure didn’t! And, if you haven’t tried the amazing Latin street food options available at Sabor, now is the time.
Sabor is a family favorite in our house. We can walk, bike, or scooter to the Southpark location and their chips and queso or kids’ quesadilla is enjoyed on repeat over here. And, if your kids are chicken fingers and fry kind of people, Sabor has you covered.
Sabor Latin Grill is an independently, locally owned Charlotte restaurant chain that focuses on authentic menu offerings from countries such as El Salvador, the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Mexico, and Colombia. Their mission is to deliver the freshest, most delicious food that takes your senses south of the border where the best cuisine is experienced on the streets!
The first Sabor was opened by Dalton Espaillat on Hawthorne Ave in Charlotte in 2013. It took a few years to gain some notoriety, but once Dalton introduced Taco Tuesday – tacos for 1 dollar! – the concept took off and Dalton and his family just opened their 15th location.
Why We Love Sabor
Two words: Salsa Bar. Also two words: Taco Tuesday.
I guarantee that Sabor has something for everyone in your family. Start with fresh tortilla chips and queso and a variety of salsas while the open kitchen prepares your meal. We love Taco Tuesday – tacos autenticos for one dollar all day! On Tuesdays, we order a minimum of 15 for our family. No lie. Dollar tacos are also available every weekday between 3 and 5.
If you want to be a little more adventurous, try a few things from their not-so-secret Secret Menu. My kids’ favorite secret menu item is queso with a side of chorizo. Add the chorizo directly to the queso and dip away! My favorite secret menu item is the “Barepa” – a barepa is an arepa filled with barbacoa – beef braised with tamarind and arbol chiles for four to five hours. An arepa is a Venezuelan style white maize (corn) cake filled with diced tomato, onion, cheese and rosada sauce. A barepa adds barbacoa instead of chicken. To order a barepa, order an arepa and ask for it to come with barbacoa, avocado and curtido slaw. If you or your family members are eating gluten-free, you need to try an arepa or a barepa. Since arepas are made with white corn flour, they are naturally gluten-free.
Feeding A Crowd?
Our favorite new addition to the Sabor menu is their Family Box. We have ordered the Family Box to feed ourselves or feed our kids’ friends. Each box comes with 6 flour tortillas, 12 corn tortillas, 1 8 oz choice of a “premium” protein item and an additional 2 choices from their regular list of protein choices. The Family Box also comes with your choice of rice and beans, and either 8 ounces of queso, pico de gallo, or guacamole, plus 8 ounces of your favorite salsa and a bag of XXL tortilla chips. It’s A LOT of food. And you can even order it online and it will be ready and waiting for you.
Try A Fresh Cocktail
If you are dining in at this fast-casual restaurant, you might want to try one of their fresh cocktails. Sabor carries a wide range of local beers, but their cocktail list is short and sweet and they are all delicious. Sabor only has five cocktails on the menu because they are all freshly made. No margarita mix in their margaritas – just freshly squeezed juices. My personal favorite is their Mojito – lots of fresh mint plus rum, lime, and soda.
If you are looking for a new spot to meet up with friends or take your kids for an adventurous meal, you need to check out Sabor Latin Grill. Do you have any favorite menu items? Let us know!
