Mark your calendars and register today for the second annual Strip It to Give It race on January 11, 2020 in Southend. Beginning and ending at Triple C Brewing Company, the one-mile fun run, 5K and 8K events will allow participants to “strip” off a layer of clothing after each mile ran. Runners will experience only a small fraction of time outdoors that the homeless community experiences all winter long. Shedding layers of clothing will give runners a small taste of what it’s like to be outside during the coldest time of the year.
Clothing will be washed and distributed to homeless neighbors through RunningWorks, a nonprofit that uses sport to empower individuals and families to break cycles of abuse, abandonment, neglect, poverty and homelessness one stride at a time. Race proceeds will benefit RunningWorks.
Interested runners, or teams, can sign up to participate by visiting Strip It to Give It’s website. A free couch to 5K training plan has been posted on the event’s website. This year, Alsco will collect all clothing on race day and wash, hang and dry items. Click here for a preview of how Alsco will help.
During Strip It to Give It’s inaugural 2019 race, 475 runners stripped off more than 1,750 pounds of clothing to help clothe their homeless neighbors. The race’s organizer, Katie Gregory, has spent nearly a decade helping with homeless outreach in the Charlotte community. She wanted to create an event for runners to give Charlotte the shirt off their backs. Read her perspective here.
