Smarties, I had the privilege of sitting down with the owners of the brand new gymnastics facility, Perfect Balance Training Center. Suzie Sanocki and Hannah Mulvihill have been on the pulse of gymnastics in Charlotte for over 20 years. They recently pursued their dreams to open their own gym, conveniently located in South Charlotte. We couldn’t be more proud of them!
Let’s get to know these amazing Smarty women and congratulate them on their new endeavors!
Tell us your history with the sport of gymnastics and how you got started teaching.
Perfect Balance Training Center is just over a year old, but has a history that spans more than two decades in Charlotte. I have always known I had a passion for working with children and a passion for gymnastics so I began my coaching career right out of college coaching at a small gym in Raleigh and then a very large gym in Atlanta. I moved to Charlotte in June, 1993 and immediately began working at International Sports Center in Matthews. Initially I was hired as an assistant team coach for their very small competitive girls team. Within a year of my start date, I took over as the girls competitive team head coach and the overall gym manager. The competitive program quickly grew and became very successful within the competitive arena. I spent 21 years coaching and positively influencing young girls in Charlotte. My passion is to give these girls confidence and strong life skills (determination, time management, teamwork, strong work ethic, etc.) through their experience in my gymnastics program. The program continued to be very successful including many state, regional and national champions. In addition, we placed many of our gymnasts into collegiate programs all over the country.
Tell us about the evolution of Perfect Balance.
In May, 2014, I made the decision to part with International Sports Center and begin having full control of my competitive team program. Perfect Balance Training Center was created out of that decision. I wanted to have all the assets and tools necessary to provide both recreational gymnasts and my team girls with the best possible training environment. I was looking for a partner that shared my passion for both children and gymnastics. Hannah Mulvihill had grown up in my program and had recently come back to work for me as a full time coach and director. I knew she was the perfect fit so our partnership was created. We spent a year continuing to train at ISC. In early June, 2015 we parted ways with ISC and moved into a temporary training facility for the summer. It was not an ideal situation in that we were in a metal building (former indoor tennis facility) with no air conditioning. However, our Perfect Balance family (athletes, parents, coaching staff) rallied together and made the best of our circumstances. I have never been more proud of a group of people and never felt more support in my life. We are a very strong group with incredible support from the Charlotte community overall.
We spent many months looking at potential spaces for a permanent home for Perfect Balance Training Center. When we looked at an old lumber warehouse on Monroe Road, we knew it was the perfect fit. After six months of up fitting the space, we moved into our beautiful 24,000 square foot facility at 8850 Monroe Road in early September. We are pleased and proud to say that we have the best training facility in Charlotte area – maybe in North Carolina. It is brand new, super clean, state of the art and packed full of great equipment.
What is your training philosophy at Perfect Balance?
“Perfect Balance Training Center” is the perfect description of our overall philosophy. We believe very strongly that kids can and should have balance in their athletic pursuits. It should be a good balance of hard work and fun. In addition, kids should continue to experience life outside the gym while pursuing their gymnastics goals. As an adult, we live our lives attempting to keep balance in all the different aspects. We want to help kids learn how to do that as children as well and encourage all families to join our “PBTC family.” Our staff is nop-notch. They are all highly trained coaches who follow a very strict and guided curriculum while encouraging kids and building their confidence and self-esteem.
Tell us the type of child and family who attends Perfect Balance?
Perfect Balance Training Center offers gymnastics classes to boys and girls as young as 18 months. Whether your child is interested in pursuing gymnastics long term or not, gymnastics is an incredible foundation for building basic coordination, strength and flexibility for all kids. In addition, we offer tumbling classes and dance classes. We have lots of fun special events at Perfect Balance as well – Birthday Parties, Parents Night Out, Open Gym, Tot Time, Day Camps and Summer Camps. You can find information on all of our classes, teams and special events on our website – www.perfectbalancecharlotte.com.
Hannah and I are very proud to have a business that is a positive influence on the children our community and providing them with a safe, clean, fun place to grow not only as an athlete, but also as a person.
