Springtime means warmer weather, longer days, spring break trips and allergies. Many of us walk outside and see our cars covered with a thin coating of green or yellow “dust” and know that in a short time we will have a “stuffy” nose, itchy eyes and sneezing. Living in North Carolina is wonderful because of all of the trees, flowers and other plants that bloom during the spring but it also means that allergies occur. As the spring approaches, watch out for these symptoms that may signify allergies:
– Nasal congestion (difficulty breathing through your nose)
– Clear nasal drainage
– Red, itchy eyes
– Sneezing
– Fatigue or feeling tired
– Pressure or fullness in the cheeks or forehead
At Charlotte Eye, Ear, Nose & Throat Associates, a provider will take a detailed medical history regarding the time(s) of year when these symptoms occur, provide a thorough examination and treatment if necessary. Treatment may include a combination of allergy pills, nasal sprays and occasionally immunotherapy (allergy shots).
Shots? If you don’t like shots we also offer drops, called sublingual immunotherapy. These “drops” go under the tongue and have been proven to be just as effective as allergy shots. This allows the patient more freedom as they can deliver this therapy at home without coming to the office for their shots and is a great method for those who don’t have time for shots or for children or adults that are afraid of needles.
Children can also present with the above symptoms of allergies but can also have other symptoms such as:
– Snoring
– Frequent throat clearing
– Dark circles under their eyes (allergic shiners)
– Prominent skin crease on the middle of their nose from frequent nose wiping
Below is a list of the common types of allergies with the seasons:
– Spring (trees)
– Summer (grasses)
– Fall (ragweed, molds)
– Year round allergies (dust mite, cat, dog)
We are here to help you as there are many ways to face allergies in the Carolinas. Don’t suffer through the upcoming spring. Get out and enjoy the beautiful weather our part of the country has to offer!
