It’s been nearly eleven years since we started at My Gym. ELEVEN YEARS. My then-twelve-week-old daughter and I started there in 2004. I was a new stay-at-home mom losing my friggin’ mind, and she was barely holding her head up. I signed up to get OUT. Of the house, that is. Little did I know that My Gym, along with my YMCA baby playgroup, would be my absolute saving grace. And, little did I know, that eleven years later, My Gym would still be my saving grace (my youngest is actually in My Gym camp as I pen this – thank you, My Gym!!!).
We started with the Baby Bundles class. I remember holding her tiny hands on a big gymnastics bar and swinging her back and forth. I remember putting her in the ball pit and naming each ball’s color. I remember talking to my new friend (who is now my “dear” friend even though we barely see each other anymore) who had a daughter a few months older and being amazed because her daughter had said the word “owl.” This was before I could wrap my head around the idea that my baby would one day talk.
Well, now my baby is now in fifth grade. She walks, talks, knows her colors, and still LOVES My Gym. So do all of her brothers. And so do I. I am not sure if it’s the amazing instructors and staff (Josh in Blakeney is one of my favorite people), the fun classes for all age groups, the birthday parties that are hands down the most fun AND easiest to host on the planet, or the a-la-carte camps for all ages that I love most. Their camps saved my sanity this summer – do you see a theme here? My Gym saving my sanity? It’s the only place in Charlotte that would take all four of my kids for the afternoon – and I didn’t have to buy an entire week to get them there. And, their drop-off classes allow you just enough time to run an errand or two. Perfection.
But that’s just me- the adult. I have never been able to figure out why kids love My Gym so much – kids of ALL ages and both genders. But, when I was writing this post, I asked my daughter to tell me why she loves My Gym so much (she hopes to one day work there in the birthday party department ;-)). She paused to think, then said:
Because they make fitness fun.
She’s right. Kids just have fun there and get fit at the same time. They come home from class or camp sweaty, healthy, and happy. The perfect trio. Oh, and tired. That’s the icing on the cake.
If you’ve never tried My Gym or maybe tried it when the kids were little and haven’t been back, now’s the time to register and give it whirl. Boys, girls, ages infant to 14. They’re running some great deals right now – check ’em out below! Make sure to tell them you’re a Smarty!!

Cheryl, I couldn’t agree more. We LOVE the summer camp options they give you and my kids are obsessed with it. I keep thinking my 7 year old is going to grow out of it but he would go every day if I let him. Josh is AMAZING and I have to applaud My Gym doing something that makes kids want to go back again and again. That is a hard thing to do. Well done My Gym!
I am amazed that they always remember each kids name, right?! I can barely remember my own.
