Beginning an Educational Journey
The junior kindergarten and kindergarten years mark the beginning of a journey of growth and discovery. A joyful learning experience that sets a strong and positive academic foundation has an impact that lasts a lifetime. At Cannon School, our junior kindergarten and kindergarten programs are designed with the needs of the student in mind—not only developing the basic skills of reading, writing, and math, but cultivating creativity, curiosity, and confidence in a warm, nurturing, and fun environment.
The JrK and K Experiences
Junior kindergarten is where students’ love of learning and the foundation for their entire education begins. At Cannon School, junior kindergarten is an important year where well-trained and experienced teachers help students build the academic, emotional, and social skills they need to be successful in kindergarten. Every day in junior kindergarten includes circle time, introduction of new skills and concepts, small group differentiated learning rotations, writing, language arts, and co-curricular classes that include physical education, library, science, art, and music.
Without missing a beat, our junior kindergarten students transition to kindergarten, which is an exciting year focused on building strong reading, writing, and math skills—developing children’s self-confidence and excitement for school and learning. Kindergarten students spend their days building on the skills, activities, and concepts learned above in junior kindergarten.
In both junior kindergarten and kindergarten at Cannon School, students spend every day working in small groups and one-on-one with their teachers who know them and exactly how to steer them in their learning adventures. Together, the junior kindergarten and kindergarten years set the tone not only for students’ Lower School experiences, but for their entire educational careers.
Half Day or Full Day—You Decide
You should be sure that the junior kindergarten and kindergarten programs you consider offer you choices. Cannon School’s junior kindergarten and kindergarten programs are half-day programs. Following half days in the classroom, students can enjoy the extended day program — a full-day complement that builds upon their classroom learning and runs from 12:15 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Likewise, after-school class offerings and enrichment opportunities in the arts, athletics, and academics abound for children five and older from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Educating the Whole Child
Beginning to let go of your child at just four or five years old can be difficult, and you should feel confident that your child is stepping into a nurturing and safe environment. At Cannon, you will hear our teachers and parents talking about “educating the whole child.” Cannon’s core values of courage, teamwork, respect, integrity, passion, and kindness inform how we create a safe, supportive, and stimulating environment for students at every grade level, and these values are integrated into our curriculum and lesson plans. Because their voices are valued, our youngest students learn to embrace their creativity, curiosity, and confidence as learners.
