Growing up, my sister and I loved building indoor forts. Our parents did not love it when every blanket, pillow, tablecloth and chair fell victim to the construction effort. A huge fight always broke out when it came time to disassemble the mess because who wants to clean that up?
Of course, Pinterest is covered up with very elaborate fort ideas. So, I grabbed a fort idea from Pinterest and took it down about a thousand notches so that even an idiot like me could assemble/dis-assemble in 5 minutes.
This poor man’s fort has been the best thing to hit our household since my son learned how to pump his legs on the swing. My kids L-O-V-E it and their playdates love it even more. It’s easy up, easy down and stowed under the bed.
It ain’t fancy however it does the trick. All you need is some tension rods and a dark colored sheet (same sheet I hang over the curtain rod at 7:30PM to make her bedroom dark – another blog for another day).
I got 3 tension rods (Wal-mart) and 2 are parallel to each other and 1 is a little higher for the pitched roof effect – very sophisticated, I know.
My people play in this thing for hours. They have tea parties and tell ghost stories and even pretend like they are camping out.
When they say “I’m bored”, I say “let’s get out the fort!” and we’re in business. It’s a game changer.

Love this, Susan!!! Right in time for summer thank you!!!
I totally forgot about building a fort. I’m going to have my niece and nephew tomorrow and after the zoo I think I’ll do this. Thanks for reminding me!
this is awesome! I remember when we used to build blanket and pillow forts in college 🙂
OMgoodness, I used to LOVE making forts!! We made a sad, (albeit fun) version with my kids and nieces back when we watched ‘The Holiday’. We thought, “how hard could it be?!” Let’s just say we never got to making any moons or stars out of tin foil with glitter ;o) BUT we ALL LOVED it! We’ll have to break out the ‘ol sheets and this time use tension rods! Xoxo!
We make forts all the time! Nothing fancy, just a blanket and whatever we can attach it to. My 4 year old loves it!
Love this idea! Thanks for sharing, can’t wait to try…
