By Smarty Mary
Smarties, I’d like to introduce you to our Smarty Dad this week! Meet my husband, Gene DiMenna! Gene juggles three jobs, one of which is his own bike shop business. Cycling is Gene’s passion and he shares his love of the sport by advocating bike safety education within the community and helping to develop youth cycling in our area. Even with his crazy schedule, he makes time for me and our boys and is a wonderful hands on Dad!
Gene’s Smarty Dad Stats:
Married to: Mary, 18 years
Dad of: Nicholas (9) and Noah (7)
Hood:
Huntersville
Years in Charlotte: 6 1/2
Occupation: Owner, Carolina Bicycle Company
How did you get into cycling?
In college I bought a bike to get around campus and was hooked!
How did you turn your passion for cycling into a career?
I was lucky to start in the bike industry right after college working for a bike manufacturer for 15 years. We came to the Charlotte area to be closer to family and started our own business. I have always remained active in the industry outside of the shop. In addition to Carolina Bicycle Company, I work with DeFeet Int’l (an NC technical apparel company) and I am working with Greg Lemond on a start-up business.
Where are you located and what kinds of bikes does Carolina Bicycle Company carry?
We are located in Charlotte at 8914 Pineville Matthew Road. We have bikes for everyone, training wheels to racing wheels and everything in between. We pride ourselves on high level service and expertise that sets us apart from others. Check us out!
Your sons love cycling also, how did you get them started?
Kids do things at their own speed. Riding a bike is no different. Remember to start them off slow. When I ride with Nicholas and Noah the most important thing is making sure they are having a good time.
Favorite place to ride?
The Saturday morning ride out of Davidson is my favorite road ride. Lake Norman State Park is the best for mountain bikes.
What’s your favorite thing about being a dad?
Hanging out with my boys whether it is riding or playing catch.
Behavioral trait you hope your children don’t inherit from you.
Too late! Impatience.
Favorite thing to do on a Saturday morning.
Mountain biking with the boys at the WhiteWater Center
Favorite place to eat with kids in LKN?
Bad Daddy’s Burger Bar or Eez at Birkdale Village.
Could not live without…
My lovely wife (Mary did not answer this question!)
