Yes, field hockey. It is not lacrosse, that is the sport with the netted sticks and they throw the ball in the air. But, Field Hockey is very similar to Soccer. There are 11 girls on the field and it is played on the grass with a ball and a stick. There are forwards, mid-fielders and defensive backs…just like soccer and the goalie gets to wear crazy looking martian pads while everyone else wears very stylish and cute skirts!
Now you ask — Does anyone play field hockey in Charlotte? I thought it was just a northern sport.
The answer is YES. Field Hockey has been played here in Charlotte for over 25 years, but it is just now starting to rapidly grow! There are several schools in town that offer middle school, JV and Varsity teams. In addition to those high schools, our non-profit organization, Charlotte Field Hockey Club offers clinics, travel teams and middle school programs that allow young girls to play the sport even if it isn’t offered at their school!
In addition to introducing the sport to the younger girls in our community, we at Charlotte Field Hockey Club take teams all over the country to participate in college recruiting showcases and have helped 9 girls just in the 2012 graduating class to find their way into college field hockey programs.
Our goal at Charlotte Field Hockey Club is to create a community of young women who are passionate about this cool sport. We support each other not only on the field hockey field but we cheer each other on in all other areas of our lives.
Girls can start participating in clinics in 3rd grade and we even have adult programs for those of us looking to relive the golden years! So check us out at www.charlottefieldhockeyclub.com.
And, if you want to introduce your daughter to the sport without having to invest in all the gear… We are offering a Beginner’s Mini Clinic in April for 3rd through 7th graders. All you need to do is bring yourself, your shin guards and a mouthguard…we will supply the rest!
Beginner’s Mini Clinic
It is a 2 session clinic on Saturdays.
April 21 and April 28 from 2-3:30 at St. Gabes School. The cost is only $35.
To register, visit www.charlottefieldhockeyclub.com and click on Beginner Clinic.

I played Field Hockey, but I grew up in NJ. Glad to see it is here in the South. It is fun!
As a mom, I love the idea of creating a close knit community where, together, you can be passionate about your sport, but also support and help each other off the field. This leads to greater teamwork. Go girls go!!
Sounds so much fun, can not wait for my little girl to play 🙂

What a great club with great leadership! I’ve had the opportunity to play with the adults (after not playing for a good 15 years) and was welcomed with open arms! And, now my daughter is playing and is passionate about it thanks to the super opportunities and awesome coaches! Thanks Charlotte Field Hockey Club!
glad I am not the only one who hasn’t played in forever who is willing to play…It’s been about 17 yrs for me (Lord that makes me feel old) but I think I will go out and try it again. What a great way to get in shape!
I have played and helped with the CHARLOTTE FIELD HOCKEY CLUB for a year and a half. What a great opportunity for young children to learn the sport, middle and high school players to improve their skills, and adults to “feel young” and have fun. Go Ambush!
If I had a daughter I would sign her up! Miki is the best:)
