Oh how this Smarty L-O-V-E-S to play the Easter Bunny! Our Easter fun starts with four hand-painted wooden baskets from the Buttercup in Myers Park. This is a 30-year+ Charlotte tradition and these baskets are just presh. And yes, my boys will use these until they don’t believe!
Our Easter bunny leaves clever little bunny baking flour tracks from the door to the baskets. Now that my almost 11-year-old is officially a holiday helper (meaning she believes no more!), I have an extra set of hands to help out in the fun!
I’m not a huge fan of loading up with candy and chocolate. Sugar + my kids = Tazmanian devils! So we limit our sweet treats to Peeps, a sprinkle of jelly beans and Reese’s eggs. Here are my fun picks this year for my kids:
Owen & Walker (6)
Anything Lego Ninjago will work for one twin, and Star Wars for the other. I like to include practical items such as new markers, pencils and crayons in each basket. I also like to give things that I’m already planning to buy for spring/summer so they will be getting a new pair of goggles, sunglasses and the Plym Bunny always includes a good book.
Isabel (8 1/2)
The main filler in her basket is Claire’s earrings as she has three pairs of earrings to her name. That’s what happens when you are the middle child! She is also getting a new American Girl Flower Girl/First Communion dress since this is a special year for her.
Ansley (10 1/2)
If she could have what she really wanted, it would be a cell phone, which cracks me up. I always ask her who she’s going to call since none of her friends have phones. Her response: “Y-O-U!”
Instead she will be getting an iTunes gift card, that should keep her occupied on her iTouch a little while longer. She will also get some Bath & Body products to help keep her motivated to stay freshy clean! And most importantly, she’s obsessed with the Hunger Games.
What about you??
What’s in your basket? Don’t cheat and go browsing on Pinterest, let’s keep it simple and not make the rest of us look bad! Think outside of the box, Smarties, and let’s make our dentists proud – you know they cringe at Halloween and Easter candy stash!
One last question – do you hide real hard-boiled eggs or are they stuffed plastic? Inside or outside? We want your tips!

Great ideas, Jen! Our Easter baskets have mini Nerf guns for the boys (just hoping they don’t want to shoot bunnies), a stuffed animal and some cool pencils for my daughter and some balls for the baby. And I’m thinking of putting a little frozen yogurt gift card in each – they LOVE gift cards!
Mine are 5 and 2, so there’s an over-abundance of candy, some small toys, small paperback fun books to read (or be read to), and always egg-shaped sidewalk chalk. My kids are obsessed with sidewalk chalk!
Last year I made sock bunnies for my then 5-year-old twins. They have requested something homemade again this year… I better get on the ball! In the past we have hidden plastic eggs with candy inside but the squirrels would make off with most of them. So last year, the Easter Bunny wrote them a letter about the squirrels… and instead of stuffing the eggs with candy, he stuffed them with “bunny bucks” which they could redeem for candy (which he had left with mom and dad). One egg for each child had a special bunny buck which they redeemed for a special prize (a Barbie for our daughter and a Lego set for our son.) To make sure everything was equal (which it has to be for twins! lol), my daughter searched for pink, purple, and yellow eggs and my son searched for green, blue, and orange. They did a great job helping one another find the right colors and they loved being able to choose what candy they got for their Easter baskets!
I guess now that my child is two I have to get on the schtick. Glad you reminded me before it is too late. But I am thinking a book, a new tooth brush and a little bit of candy.
The Easter Bunny thinks bigger (not necessarily expensive) is better in our house. He usually brings the girls new flip-flops, mini lego kit for my oldest, polly pockets for my youngest, and new kites, fake press-on nails for kids, a couple of books – (Ollies has THE BEST kids books for only $2.99 – $3.99 – yes, that’s right Ollies!) and some Peeps to complete the basket. Sometimes I throw in a new beach towel with their name on it.
A suggestion for the Easter candy…negotiate that the children have to brush after eating each piece. This will slow down the consumption rate. Colorful toothbrushes with favorite comic characters, are a great addition to an Easter basket, and add some flavored dental floss.
