I love the movie Almost Famous. I identified with the journalist who loved music and loved to write. Those are two of my passions, and it got me thinking. I could do a music review right here on Charlotte Smarty Pants. Now this blog is going to be more Raffi than Rolling Stone, but that’s ok.
When I first had my daughter, I knew I wanted to expose her to music at an early age. I was that mom who played classical music during Tummy Time and while driving in the car. But that got old pretty quick. I still wanted music she could enjoy, but something my husband and I could enjoy as well. And unfortunately, there is some really bad stuff out there. I can only take so much of I’m a Little Teapot before I start to twitch. So began my quest to find kid friendly tunes won’t make parents want to stick a hot poker in their ears. Now I’m not promising you that these songs won’t stick in your head for days on end, but they are fun and real crowd pleasers with the little ones.
My top 5 favorite CD’s for kids 0-5 are:
Laurie Berkner’s – Whadda Ya Think of That. – our favorite jam on this CD are We Are The Dinosaurs and Doodle Bug. The songs are fun to sing and dance to with your favorite little one.
Justin Roberts – Meltdown – two best songs – Cartwheels and Summersaults and Meltdown. These don’t feel like kids songs, just catchy little tunes with a snappy beat.
The Bear Collection – We are huge fans of The Music Class™ in our house. Right now The Bear Collection is really popular. The music is diverse and perfect for interacting with your little one and exposing them to different styles of music. Top Picks – Six Little Ducks and Riding in My Car.
All You Need is love – who doesn’t love the Beatles? Well since most people do, this CD is fun to have on hand for classic fun with the fab four.
Slow Jams – now everyone needs a couple of slow jams in their collection for calming the beast within. Rockabye Baby Lullaby renditions of Bob Marley fits the bill and you will even find yourself humming along.
My two-year-old loves these so much, that she actually requests songs from the back seat. We hear – Mama play Dinosaur Song!!! Or Mama Music Class SOOONNNGGGSSS shouted at ear piercing decibels all the time. She knows the CD’s and songs by name and so hopefully she will grow up loving music as much as I did. Any other top songs or CD’s I should know about out there? Gotta keep adding new songs to our playlist!

A friend of mine just emailed me that The Curious George Movie Sound Track is fantastic. I love Jack Johnson, so I am all over it.
Hey girls-
I just went through my preschool playlists, you know me, I’m ALL ABOUT the tunes! Here are some good ones for the kiddos and moms/dads to enjoy:
Owl City – fireflies & hot air balloons
Barenaked Ladies – they have AWESOME kids tunes, my fave is raisins & la la lemon
Glee Cast – somewhere over the rainbow (Lisa, totally reminds me of JB:-)
Colbie Caillat – kiss the girl (princess meets the most beautiful voice on radio today!
Cake – Mahna mahna
Elizabeth Mitchell – Three Little Birds
Who Let the Dogs Out – Baha Men
They Might be Giants – Hot Dog (Mickey Mouse Clubhouse song) plus tons of others
I don’t see Katy Perry on this list – what gives? I had to reevaulate my car music when my 3 year old daughter starting singing TGIF. Yikes.
They Might Be Giants Here Come the 123s and Here Come the ABCs are staples in my car! The tunes are so very catchy and they also have a DVD companion for road trips. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_c_1_21?url=search-alias%3Dpopular&field-keywords=they+might+be+giants+kids&sprefix=they+might+be+giants+%2Caps%2C146
