Growing up, I was called “Coop”. There were many Susans in my grade and school. Since I was Susan Cooper I became Coop at a very young age. Everyone called me this – friends, teachers, parents, etc. The name stuck all the way through college. People I grew up with or went to college with still call me Coop today.
My kids’ nicknames are Sissy and Bubba. I am as anti-Bubba as they come but it just happened very innocently as big Sissy started calling him her Bubba. All of her friends think that’s his real name. None of them call him Clay. If I ever open a children’s store, I’ll call it “Sissy & Bubba”. The weird thing is that when I was pregnant with Clay we referred to him as “Deuce” (as in the 2nd child) but we switched to Bubba after he was born…go figure.
My husband and I call each other “Harbie” and we have no idea why or exactly when it began…definitely way before we had children. People think we are saying “Harvey”. My husband’s family calls me “Subo” which is short for Susan Bowman. Dunno why…it has just been that way for the last 12 years.
Smarties, what nickname did you go by? What nicknames do you have for your children?

Great article! I always thought the harbie thing was a bit random… Love the kids store name!
I was also as anti Bubba as they come but I call our son (2nd child) that all the time. Several of our friends call him Bubba as well but they mostly use his real name, Andrew. My daughter I call goose – I have no idea why – I think maybe from calling her silly goose? I am definitely the only one who calls her this though. We also call her Sissy so I love the Sissy and Bubba store name. My nicknames that I call my kids change so often though – interesting post!
