Mompetitor

One of my besties (a non-mom) sent me this video clip so I had to share it with all of you. You may have seen it making the rounds on Facebook. The video (3 minutes, 19 seconds) depicts a conversation between two moms, one of which is a bonafide “mompetitor”.

My favorite part of the video goes like this…
Mom: So, What else do you like to do?
Mompetitor: What do you mean?
Mom: What hobbies do you have?
Mompetitor: My children are my hobbies. We strive for perfection.

I’m sure we have all run into our fair share of mompetitors! (or friendpetitors or neighborpetitors) This video got me thinking about my gal pals. They lift me up when I’m down and genuinely cheer alongside me when I triumph. And, I strive to do the same for them…(I hope!) My friends (non-moms and mommies) continually “prop up” my life…who else would serve as my marriage counselor, comic relief, cheerleader, confidante, stand-in pediatrician and sanity check?

Once you add kids to the mix, your relationships with your girlfriends can morph into something more like frenemies than BFFs. Some of these relationships flourish and grow as you lean on each other during the wild ride of motherhood. Some don’t survive because having different outlooks on mommyhood is just too much strain; and some turn into mompetitors! Motherhood can be soooo lonely and isolating and for me, it’s having a support group that has kept me halfway sane. To each person that I’m privileged to call “my friend”, I appreciate you.
