Waiting out the last few weeks of pregnancy is like watching wet sand move through an hourglass. You watch for symptoms, and you watch for signs. You hurry to the doctor only to be sent home to wait . . . and wait, and wait, and wait.
The books are read, the nursery is done, and you are very much, “over it”. Every day brings new challenges and new theories as to when your bundle will arrive. Oh, the waiting game! The game where itchy skin and anxiety reign.
So, how do you beat the last days of pregnancy? Tips, anyone? How do you answer the question, “You haven’t had that baby YET?”. I realize everyone is being loving and caring, but how do you care for yourself when you’re at the end of your rope?
A special trip to get a manicure and pedicure is a nice touch (I know I’m not the only one who secretly wishes the foot massage will induce labor). Relaxing in a warm bath takes some of the pressure off. Cupcakes work, if only temporarily.
Waiting to meet your new baby and regain your life is difficult. No one can tell you to “take it easy” and relax. Relaxing just isn’t an option, although we all try, don’t we? You want to calm your mind and see your child for the first time. You want to breathe easier, and not just from relief of their arrival, but from finally getting the ability to inhale without wheezing due to size.
Being pregnant is like being pulled in a million different directions. Pride, nerves, love, joy, anxiety, misery; they are all a part of the journey. But, nothing, and I mean nothing, is like that moment they place your child in your arms. All the pain of pregnancy, heck, even labor, is gone. All that is left is bliss and ease knowing it was all worth it. The days of waiting are gone and what remains is love. Pure love. You become complete. And then, one day something amazing happens, you look back on your “days of waiting” with fond memories (hard to believe, but it is true). And eventually when the tired eyes are gone and your new addition is sleeping through the night, you think, “I could do that again”. And so it continues . . .
I’m waiting and waiting for my twins, but I’m trying not to be in such a hurry this time.

Krista, I am right there with you…waiting for number 3 (first two were twins) in 9 days (but who is counting?). We ran into each other at dairy queen a few weeks back—so obviously that is one of my secrets–I've been spending a lot of time at Pinkberry! Also, movies as often as I can–cold and dark and distracting. And the pool, takes down the swelling and working on that "glow." Wishing you the best!
Hey my Dairy Queen friend! I love the movie idea, thanks! I may skip the pool. Maternity bathing suits can only stretch so far! ; ) Good luck and congrats on your upcoming addition. ~ Krista
