What a happy day Smarties! The warmer days are here, my kids are playing outside again and I am wondering where my cold toughness has gone. I grew up in the mountains, you couldn’t keep us inside, no matter what the weather was. Now I feel the need to be bundled up inside with my big fuzzy boots/slippers on. On to the weekend, there are several great plays/performances to be enjoyed. We are fortunate to live in an area with many multi-talented people! Looking for a date night but short a sitter, Noah’s Art is hosting a Parents’s Night Out for the kids. Are your kids glued to the TV after the holidays, take them to Discovery Place for Exercise Day. This weekend is about fun for the whole family. Enjoy and please share your events, email me at Courtenay@charlottesmartypants.com.

Normally, I enjoy CSP and the positive message it sends. I was, however, very disappointed to find the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus featured on your event giveaways. I can only hope that you are unaware of (and not condoning) Ringling Bros' reputation for animal cruelty. Ringling Bros. has been under investigation and facing criminal charges for animal abuse for years. My personal belief is that even if the animals are treated well in the circus, these beautiful wild animals do not belong in captivity, being dressed in silly outfits and made to perform skits for our entertainment. It is degrading, depressing and wrong. The fact that they are being abused (just look at the videos on youtube of them being repeatedly beaten with bullhooks, leaving bloody holes in their skin) is enough to bring me to tears. Please, please reconsider featuring this event on your site. I hope that next year when the circus comes to town, you consider publishing some information about why we SHOULDN'T be attending. Here is a link for your reference:http://www.hsus.org/wildlife/issues_facing_wildlife/circuses/circus_myths.html
I agree completely. We all need to become more aware about the circus. We are definitely anti-circus at our house. It is too bad that CMS is taking our kindergartner to see it on a field trip…
The federal court dismissed this case against Ringling Bros on Dec 29, 2009. Please review the details for the Center for Elephant Conservation and the animal care FAQs on http://www.ringling.com before condemning the circus based on hearsay. The plaintiff (a former circus employee) was paid $190,000 by lawyers to bring charges against the circus. Deep pockets are always a target for false lawsuits in our litiginous society. Tort reform would benefit us all, including the elephants whose species is being preserved by institutions like Ringling Brothers.
Regarding the previous comment, this case was dismissed for lack of standing – a procedural matter – and never examined the merits of the case. Here is a quote from the plaintiff's attorney:"After a nearly ten year legal battle against the Ringling Bros. Circus regarding its mistreatment of endangered Asian elephants, a federal judge yesterday dismissed the case on grounds that the plaintiffs lacked ‘standing’ to pursue their claims. Because he dismissed the case for a lack of jurisdiction, the Court did not address any of the extensive evidence presented at trial that showed Asian elephants kept on chains for much of their lives and hit with bull hooks, or the testimony of several renowned experts that these practices harm the elephants in many ways. The case focuses on elephant mistreatment under the Endangered Species Act. Had the Court addressed the merits of the case and ruled favorably for the plaintiffs, the Circus would have been required to stop its chaining and bull hook practices or obtain a special permit from the federal government to continue to engage in these practices."
I recently came accross your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I dont know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.Mariahttp://smallpet.info
