You do not want to miss this upcoming event on Saturday, September 19th! Know Your Farms, is a business working to rebuild the local food system. Now, we all should know that we are doing our part for the environment and for the local farmers by eating local food. This is a fabulous way to support the movement and to teach your children where our food comes from and why it’s important to eat local food. Ten area farms are opening their doors to allow the community to come in and tour their facilities. You may have seen some of these local farms at the farmer’s markets. So here is your chance to learn more about where your food comes from. What kid doesn’t like going to a farm? Please visit the website, purchase your ticket and you can decide which farms you would like to visit.
The tour runs from 2 – 7 P.M. and the tickets for the tour are $25 per car. For more information and to purchase tickets go to www.knowyourfarms.com You will also find an online map of the tour. Tickets can also be purchased at the Milky Way on East Blvd.
Participating farms include:
Apple Orchard Farms in Stanley
Big Oak Farm in Denver
Birdbrain Ostrich Ranch in Sherill’s Mill
Gilcrest Natural Farm in Iron Station
Wild Turkey Farms in China Grove
Bame Farm in Rowan County
Please visit the website for more information about supporting the local food movement, community supported agriculture and much more. They have a local food group in which you can order food online and then pick up at a drop box location. They even have a meal in a box. Your four-person meal comes with recipes from a professional chef with step by step instructions and the origins of the ingredients. Very cool!
They are always looking for volunteers as well so keep this in mind for something a little bit different than your usual volunteer work.
Hope to see you there!
