Time is such a valuable commodity! We’ve talked a lot about how we find little ways to get all those millions of things done that fill up our busy days, whether it is shifting priorities or trying to find time for ourselves. In our opinion, one of those golden opportunities we’ve found is called the Lunch Hour!
Jenny says:
Gone are the days of going out to lunch with my work friends to hang out and gossip. I now make the most of lunch hour so that I can get home as soon as possible at the end of the day. If I don’t work through lunch, I try to run an errand or two. We have a huge refrigerator at work, so on occasion if we are in need of food at the house I will go to Harris Teeter at lunch. I ask them to pack all refrigerated items together so that I can put them in the fridge when I get back to work. I keep the others in the car. Every once in a while, I go to the gym and get a quick workout in. Other times I eat my lunch at my desk and pay my bills. Target is also a frequent destination because it is close and I am obsessed with it (you just never know what you are going to find!). It is amazing what I can accomplish in 45 minutes by myself.
Tracy says:
OK – I’ll admit it … My lunch hour is kind of my guilty pleasure. Not every day … as there certainly are the days when I work through lunch in order to get things done at work so I can leave the office at a reasonable time. But that is the one point in my day when I can “sneak away” by myself for a good 60 minutes or so. This is a great time for me to run errands that I normally don’t have time for like shoe shopping or a quick trip to the mall. And now that the Target in Midtown is open, I often make a jaunt over there – there’s something almost therapeutic about strolling the isles of Target! My lunch time is also a great time to catch up with friends. And like Jenny, I also use this hour to pay bills or do some online shopping. It really is amazing how much you can get done when you don’t have a 4-year old tugging at you or the office is quiet because everyone else is out to lunch!
We want to hear from you! What are you able to squeeze into your lunch hour or what other tips do you have for finding more time in your day?

I am a full-time working mother of a 3 yr old little boy. I hardly ever get any “me” time, let alone time with my husband. So during my lunch hour I usually run errands or try to get a small work out in. Every Friday my husband picks me up on my lunch hour and we make a “date” out of it. It has worked out great for us since we don’t get to spend alot of alone time together and we don’t have to pay for a sitter.
I love Target as well, that is usually where I find myself while waiting the 30 minutes my daughter is in speech. I really want to go to the new one in Midtown, it just looks fun. To the above poster, what a great idea to have a weekly lunch date with you hubby!!
would love to read a column from stay-at-home moms and how they spend their day
I work FT and love to use my lunch hour for ettands or just reading a book. I usually go to the library each week and get my son a bag of books, CD’s and videos. I love Target too!
I work full time with one of the local financial institutions, but I do work from home (what a blessing!). I am also starting a business with two friends and have 3 children that are at home this summer! AAAHHHH! I usually do not get a normal lunch hour. Once I ensure the kids are fed, I will try to grab a bite to eat, which is normally in front of my PC or run some errand that can be done before the next conference call. As crazy as it sounds, I would not change it because it allows me to be home with my children and take a dip in the pool with them at 5:30instead of sit in Charlotte traffic! Although, we are normally running to taikwondo at that time…
