When I found out I was oops pregnant with identical twin boys , I knew I was in desperate need for help. With no family here and friends with way too many children (!), I was pretty much on my own. Early in the pregnancy, I discovered that I was at high risk for Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS) since my boys are identical and shared a placenta. When I was 18 weeks pregnant, I went in to my OB appointment and had to bring my 2- and 4-year-old daughters who happened to be on their worst behavior of the summer. They were literally bouncing off the walls when my doctor was telling me that bed rest could come at any time and by looking at my children, I needed to line up help asap. Devastated, but knew it was the painful truth, I set on my way to find the perfect nanny.
Initially, I tried to poach a few nannies from friends of friends. I quickly learned that this is not only uncool, but some moms will actually hunt you down. Now I am one of those moms, so come near my perfect nanny and you will forever regret it! For some reason, I was determined not to go through a nanny service. I felt like I knew enough moms in Charlotte and I would often times receive emails from people who outgrew their nanny because their children were off to kindergarten, so I just hoped one of those emails would come – like the very next day. Well that didn’t happen. So I decided my next approach would be to send a blanket email to every woman I knew in Charlotte. Surely someone would have a lead or two. Well as luck would have it, I got exactly 12 leads. After interviewing the first six or so people, I quickly realized that this was going to be WAY harder than I thought. By the time I got to #11, I decided that even with four kids under four, I really didn’t need a nanny. These people who came through my door just didn’t cut it and I would rather suffer through it on my own. Enter nanny candidate #12. I knew after three sentences that this girl was good. She said all the right buzz phrases like teaching through interactive play, being consistent with discipline, laundry and light cleaning (hello? No nanny in Charlotte would offer this up on the first interview, or even the 10th interview!). I had to contain my excitement because she still had to make the background check. Well she did with flying colors and she has cared for my beautiful family ever since.
So where did my perfect nanny come from? Tune in Monday to find out!
