We got the chance to talk to a local high school who has been taking voice lessons with Charlotte Star Room for the last three years. Interview follows. Go get ’em, Jordan!

Tell us where your love of singing came from.
I’ve loved all things music for as long as I can remember, and I’d always dreamed of singing like many of the artists I grew up hearing on the radio.
What prompted you to take voice lessons?
I began taking voice lessons to build confidence in myself and my voice and to add to my musical repertoire. I played guitar and bass before I started taking voice lessons, so I felt it was important to have structured guidance just as I had when learning instruments.
What has surprised you the most about taking voice lessons?
The most surprising thing about voice lessons was learning about the technicality that goes into singing. It looks a lot easier than it is, especially when you’re watching professional musicians who’ve been training for years.
Tell us a little about what you’ve learned and how you’ve grown as a vocalist with Charlotte Star Room.
I’ve learned a lot about breath control and the importance of it when singing. You can never practice your breathing too much! It’s really that important! I’ve also learned about dynamics and the correct positions for your mouth and body to ensure good voice quality. Since I began at Star Room, I’ve grown a lot as a vocalist and a person. It’s crazy how the confidence you build in the studio quickly flows into all aspects of your life. Before Star Room, I’d never performed on stage, but now I’m in a band that plays gigs and open mics. I never imagined I could do those things until working with Alexis.
What’s your favorite song to sing?
I definitely can’t narrow down one song I like to sing the most, but I always love to sing anything by Paramore. Hayley Williams has the best voice, so it’s fun to try and keep up. Their songs can also be pretty challenging, which, of course, only makes them better to work on in the studio.
