I have been counting down the days since my girls were born when they would be old enough to participate in Girls on the Run (GOTR). Only 5 more months to go! My girls have seen me running for as long as they can remember. Although I’m no marathon runner, I truly enjoy the sense of accomplishment that I feel after a run, no matter how long or short my distance is. My hope is that my girls will want to be a tiny bit like me and enjoy running. Thanks to founder, Molly Barker and her incredible staff at Girls on the Run, my girls will train for their first 5k and enjoy a structured program to make them stronger girls on many levels.
Girls on the Run is an after-school program that uses the power of running to help prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. GOTR is for girls from 3rd through 8th grade. Through interactive activities such as running, playing games, and discussing important issues, participants learn how to celebrate being girls. The program focuses on building self-esteem and improving emotional and physical health. During the 12-week program, girls are empowered with a greater self-awareness, a sense of achievement and a foundation in team building to help them become strong, content and self-confident young women.
Come enjoy this 5k event celebrating Girls on the Run. The event will include food, families, fun, festivities and of course, a 5k. Hey, do y’all know if there is a boy’s version of this anywhere local? Maybe a spin-off or affiliate of GOTR?Love the concept but don’t have any girls to take advantage of it!
Thanks for posting this! I’ve been a GOTR volunteer for about 5 years now and have seen some amazing changes in girls who participate in the program! It is so much more than running. There is no boys on the run but i think there is a similar program at Beverly Woods Elem. Hope to see you all on Saturday!Melanie Bradle
I love this program! I use to be a running buddy when I taught elementary school and thought very highly of this structured program that really was about building self esteem. I can’t wait for my daughter to be old enough to participate.
Hi – to answer your question about a program for boys, a pilot program started this year with a small group of boys at Beverly Woods Elementary School. the program is expanding to six schools next year – it’s called “Let Me Run.” I’m hoping to have my son be involved next year.. I’ve heard nothing but good about this program (and of course the Girl’s program GOTR)…
