We finally have a break from the heat! And as much as I’ll miss summer until it rolls back around, it’s time to get going on all the special things only autumn has to offer. Here’s a quick rundown of my 5 favorite things to do with my family in the fall.
1. Carowinds!!
I know y’all must think I’m some sort of zealot at this point, but Carowinds is truly the gift that keeps on giving for families! Our season pass gets plenty of use because the attractions change throughout the year. The Great Pumpkin Fest began last weekend and will continue through the end of October. Got a kid who can’t wear their Halloween costume just once? No problem! They can dress up and trick or treat every weekend at Carowinds! They’ll get candy, paint pumpkins, and enjoy the rides. My crew isn’t quite old enough to enjoy Scarowinds yet, but it’s on the date night list every year.
2. Apple picking far enough away to feel like you’re in the mountains
Apple Hill Orchard and Cider Mill is our family’s favorite. It’s in Morganton, about an hour away from Charlotte, and feels mountainous. The elevation is high enough to catch a crisp breeze and a view. The orchard is big and beautiful, with plenty of room to run and play and lots of different types of apples and apple byproducts. And since you’re already there, you should absolutely see their downtown. It’s the cutest, with great restaurants and a walkable circle around their Town Hall.
3. Visit the Farmer’s Market
The market in the fall is so colorful and festive that it gives the summer a run for its money! Taking my boys to the farmer’s market, letting them count their own money, and try new fruits and veggies never gets old.
Last year it led to them trying figs, spaghetti squash, and Asian pears for the first time! Much like when they cook with me, allowing them to select and purchase food on their own, makes them much more amenable to eating it. The King’s Drive and Cotswold Farmers Markets are our favorites for size and selection (and, let’s be honest, photo ops, because #picsoritdidnthappen).
4. U.S. Whitewater Center
Watching rafters brave the rapids without being swarmed by mosquitos is truly glorious! We pack lunch, our own hammocks to hang on their stands, and our yoga mats, and settle in. The boys love the Center’s free kids ropes course and live music. We love that we can grab a drink, allow the kids some freedom, and enjoy the natural beauty of the space as the trees change color. They also have free yoga classes throughout the week, so don’t forget to check the schedule!
5. Drive the Blue Ridge Parkway in mid-October
Every year I wish that I had hired a driver so my entire family could just enjoy the incredible views! But alas, I haven’t won the lottery yet. But meandering along the Blue Ridge Parkway will have you feeling like a million bucks! The mountains, waterfalls, and leaf peeping are truly unbelievable! Stopping every few miles to take in the vistas or hike to a bubbling creek is pure magic. And it’s how I know that the autumn season is in full swing!
Let me know if you check out any of the places on my list for the first time and how your family likes it! I wish you a beautiful fall season, full of everyday magic that you’ll store in your heart for years to come.
