It’s finally fall, y’all! After a particularly hot and humid summer, autumn brings pumpkin spice and all things nice. I may have been a little overzealous, but my daughter and I visited The Hunter Farm this past Wednesday since she had a half day of school (Yes, even during the 90 degree weather.) I’m so glad we did.
We came home with the most gorgeous — not to mention reasonably-priced — mums and heirloom pumpkins. It felt good to be supporting Carolina agriculture by sourcing them at the farm. Communing with nature and Charlotte neighbors on the farm was just what we needed as well. “Mom, do you hear the cicadas?” my daughter asked. I had not even noticed until she pointed this out to me.
The farm visit began with a wagon ride out to the barn where we were able to meet and greet several types of animals: baby goats, cows, roosters, bunnies, and horses. I have to admit it was nice to feel like a kid again, with my kid, during the middle of a work week. The farmer shared many interesting details and introduced us to all the animals, who were pleased to make our acquaintance. Who knew a rooster’s comb feels like a Sour Patch Kid? After this, it was time to return to the patch where we were able to select a small pumpkin to take home, which was included with our tickets.
With such a beautiful bounty of interesting gourds and flowers, I couldn’t resist bringing home even more. I loaded up the trunk and set it all out on the porch and deck to enjoy as much of the season as possible.
