We know, Smarties, the news about the delta variant of COVID-19 and the impact it will have on our daily lives is on all of our minds this week. Given that Mecklenburg County reinstated its mask mandate for public indoor spaces on Wednesday, even for those who are vaccinated, businesses around Charlotte are trying to figure out what that means for them – at least until the mandate expires Sept. 1. When it comes to fitness in particular, masking up is a tricky proposition given how difficult it is to get quality cardiovascular exercise while wearing a covering over the mouth and nose. Several of our favorite local fitness studios – CycleBar Waverly, CycleBar Midtown and Cross Conditioning Training – are finding ways to respect restrictions, promote safety and still provide clients in-person workouts indoors without constantly having their faces completely covered.
For example, both CycleBar Waverly and CycleBar Midtown announced that while their clients will be required to where face masks in studio, once they are on their bikes, they will have the option to remove the face mask and replace it with a face shield. If not wearing a shield, clients should continue to exercise with a face mask on. Both of those CycleBar locations announced they would begin selling face shields at the front desk Friday (Aug. 20.) CycleBar Waverly clients are encouraged to e-mail any questions to: waverlygm@cyclebar.com.
Cross Conditioning Training studio features classes no larger than 10 people to begin with and will now require in-person participants to show proof of vaccination (while allowing some leeway to clients who remain unvaccinated for religious or medical reasons.) CCT is requiring all clients to wear masks while entering and leaving the studio and when retrieving weights and workout equipment. But while performing exercises in their designated spaces, clients will be allowed to pull down their masks. CCT trainers will be designing workouts to keep clients in a given space, without sharing equipment or moving around the room, and the studio door will remain open throughout each class.
