Making a red, white, and blue trifle is absolutely one of my favorite desserts to bring to a summer party. It’s perfect for the Fourth of July, Memorial Day, Labor Day … or, really, any fun summer gathering. A trifle is simply a layered dessert – usually made with some type of cake, fruit, and cream. For this trifle, I use angel food cake, cool whip, and berries. That’s it. I guarantee you can easily find what you need at any local grocery store.
Because I am making this for the Fourth of July holiday, I made sure my berries were all red and blue – strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries. Because the raspberries are a little softer, I only used those on top. For the layers between the cake and cream, I used a generous amount of blueberries and strawberries.
Making a trifle is the easiest dessert to make. Start with the angel food cake and tear ⅓ of the cake into bite sized pieces and spread in an even layer on the bottom of a clear glass bowl. Spread about ⅓ of the container of cool whip over the angel food cake layer.
For the fruit … Cut the strawberries into quarters and spread about ⅓ of your strawberries over the cool whip. Add almost half of the blueberries and then repeat the layers – angel food cake, cool whip, and fruit. For the final layer, use the remaining ⅓ of the angel food cake, ⅓ of the cool whip, and the remaining fruit – strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries. I try to make the top layer a little decorative if I am feeling fancy.
That’s it! So easy. So pretty. I guarantee this will be a hit for your next summer party.
