CSP Team Note: We recently caught up with George Ramsay of Bold Music for some tips of giving the gift of music this holiday season. We appreciate his time and expertise!
With the holidays right around the corner, what are some ways parents can give the gift of music to their kids?
First and foremost, the absolute best way to give the gift of music is through music lessons. Listening to and loving music is one thing, but actually learning how to play music is where the real fun happens. Our company offers in-home music lessons, which makes learning music easier than ever!
If your child is just getting started in music, what instrument is best to give?
For younger kids (under age 8 or so), I typically recommend piano, ukulele or drums. The guitar can be pretty tricky at a young age. Over 8 – your options are pretty much wide open. I actually believe that one of the most important things here is to listen to your child and see what instrument they are interested in learning. If they are drawn to something in particular, chances are they will be more engaged in lessons and in practice.
What about for a more “seasoned” musician – what are some instruments that are more challenging that might be fun to give?
If you already play piano, pick up the guitar – it will expand your horizons and make you think about music in a different way. If you already play guitar, try ukulele, bass, banjo or mandolin. They’re all somewhat related but have their own unique challenges as well. Of course, learning drums is always beneficial – rhythm is universal!
Why do you think the gift of music is the best a kid can find under the tree?
Giving the gift of music is something that will last a lifetime, and learning music also comes with a ton of cognitive and developmental benefits, especially when started as a kid. Plus – it can be super fun!
