I absolutely adore Matthews. We’ve lived in the Matthews area for about eight years and have seen it blossom into a vibrant scene that still holds onto the small-town charm. A quick 20-minute drive from central Charlotte, there are so many great kid-friendly places to enjoy. Here are a few to explore over a weekend!
Cutie Patootie Kids Spa. This mini-mani/pedi spa is great for a GDO (girls’ day out!) They specialist in kids’ mani/pedis as well as parties that feature karaoke. My daughter loves to pick out her nail colors and be pampered.
Colonel Francis Beatty Park. This ((FREE)) gem has more than 250 acres ripe for exploration. There are trails to enjoy, a lake to feed ducks, fish and kayak on, two playgrounds, plenty of sports courts and fields and so much more. Pack your lunch to enjoy a scenic lake-front picnic, too!
Matthews CharMeck Library. The library is in the classic architecture of the Town Hall building in downtown Matthews. It’s filled with endless possibilities, with a nice-sized kids’ section and play area and even features lots of events including family story times, scavenger hunts and more! Make sure to sign your little ones up over the summer to keep reading and they can rack up points to cash in for prizes!
Brakeman’s Coffee. This fairly new, local coffee shop is quickly becoming a favorite to this small town! The super friendly crew behind the counter crafts amazing caffeinated drinks! Beyond the amazing ambiance, they offer events such as “Mother’s Day Tea” and “Father-Daughter Dates”. It is a great way to start the day!
Food Truck Fridays at Stumptown Park. Every other Friday through the end of September, downtown Matthews is jamming! Grab a bite from one of around 10 food trucks and then find a spot on the lawn to enjoy live music that varies each time a new band takes the stage. The kids can also play on the volleyball court or the playground, too!
Matthews Farmers’ Market. Kick off your Saturday morning by stopping by the Matthews Farmers’ Market. A little fun fact is that all the products (except fish) are sourced within 50 miles of Matthews – so not only are you getting great food, but you’re helping the local community!
Seaboard Brewing. The only brewery in Matthews has a great space inside and out. There are always families outside enjoying the weather on the spacious patio and the ambiance while parents can enjoy a refreshing beer.
Artisen Old Fashioned Gelato. This delicious shop touts healthy frozen treats for every taste. They have classics such as chocolate as well as tart flavors like pineapple. I highly recommend the chocolate orange gelato (drooling as I type this.)
Big Air. Looking to escape the heat this summer? Head inside of Big Air for the area’s newest trampoline park that also includes AR, obstacle course and a dedicated 5 and under area to help keep tiny bouncers safe.
There are so many great options to enjoy in Matthews. There are more restaurants that didn’t get mentioned but are worth checking out, as well as another great park and not to mention bowling alley and our very own Charlotte Independence play soccer in Matthews! Bring the fam to Matthews and I’m sure you won’t be disappointed!
