Smarties, Have you heard of the organization called the Sandbox? They are doing AMAZING things for the children in our community who have been diagnosed with cancer, a life-altering, rare or terminal disease. They make it their mission “to lock arms with people in our community to meet the practical, social and emotional needs of families at the time of diagnosis or referral.” Through the Sandbox CARRE program opportunities are created for families that encourage friendships, create lasting memories and most importantly, restore hope.
This Saturday, November 10th, the Sandbox is having their Hero Race 5K & Fun Run.
Heroes come in all shapes, ages, and sizes!
This Race goes out to all the Heroes! Heroes are people in our lives who have done extraordinary things. They show strength, bravery and courage in the face of unfathomable circumstances. In The Sandbox, HEROES are the children who have gone before us. This Race is designed to recognize each and every one of those Heroes. “Who Is Your Hero?” is a 5k run/walk that raises money to support children with cancer, rare, a life-altering or terminal illness through The Sandbox CARRE program. This program strives to meet the individual needs of families. The Race will begin in the heart of Waverly in South Charlotte and cover 5k (3.2miles). The race includes a sponsorship expo, children’s fun run, music and much more!

ABOUT THE SANDBOX
The Sandbox comes together to create memories of a lifetime, build cherished friendships and provide strategic support in the midst of tumultuous circumstances.
In 2010, Brian Dulin, Mara Campolungo and a group of friends saw a need – helping families during Christmas at Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte, NC. After the holidays, this group of “go-getters” wanted to continue to provide support for families. In March of 2011, a social worker at the hospital asked if they could host a prom for patients who would miss their own prom due to treatment or the eventual impact of their illness. The answer, of course, was “Yes!” And, The Sandbox’s signature event, An Evening of Believing Prom was born.
Today, from such humble beginnings, we now serve families through our CARRE program. The Sandbox’s CARRE program (Caring About Real Relationships Empathetically) is the umbrella to all of the support we offer families in The Sandbox. The Sandbox has humbly served more than 5,000 families in the greater Charlotte region as well as some parts of South Carolina through a variety of programs and events.
When a child is diagnosed with cancer, life-altering, rare or terminal illness, it is our mission is to lock arms with people in our community to meet the practical, social and emotional needs of families at the time of diagnosis or referral. We want to create opportunities for families that encourage friendships, create lasting memories, produce joyful experiences and most importantly, restore hope.
WHY THE SANDBOX
A sandbox is a place of fun, excitement and joy. It’s a place where people of any age can gather together to express themselves and build something wonderful and know they belong. It is our hope that we are able to provide support unique to each family’s circumstances.
