In Smartyland, we think music and the holidays go hand in hand. We can’t think of a better way to get in the holiday spirit than to see the Youth Orchestras of Charlotte perform their Family Concert. So, grab you calendar and jot this down, The Youth Orchestras of Charlotte will perform A FAMILY CONCERT on Tuesday, November 20 at 7:30pm at Halton Theater!
Youth Orchestras of Charlotte Family Concert
Over 200 talented student musicians (grades 4 through 12) from all over the greater Charlotte area will take the stage as the Youth Orchestras of Charlotte presents their Family Concert. All ensembles represented within the YOC program will be featured. The YOC Flute Choir, Sinfonia Strings, and the Preparatory Orchestra will perform a variety of musical selections on the first half of the concert and the Youth Orchestra of Charlotte will take the stage on the second half, performing a challenging program of works by American composers Samuel Barber, Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland and Morton Gould. YOC concertmaster, Caroline Smoak, is the featured student musician. She will perform the first movement of the Barber Violin Concerto.
Featured Student Musician Caroline Smoak
At the age of five, Caroline began studying the violin. One year later, she started studying piano. Caroline, now 15, studies violin with Violet Pan of Fort Mill, SC, and Weiwei Le of Las Vegas, NV. She has spent the last two summers studying with Itzhak Perlman at the Perlman Music Program in Long Island, NY.
Caroline won both the junior and senior divisions of the Peter Perret Youth Talent Search and performed with the Winston-Salem Symphony in 2016 and 2018. She won both the junior and senior divisions of the Symphony Guild of Charlotte’s Young Artist competition, performing with both the Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestra in 2017 and the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra in 2018. She has played in Dr. Pereira’s youth orchestra program since the third grade.
Music Director & Conductor Dr. Ernest Pereira
Dr. Ernest Pereira has nurtured the talents of the region’s finest young musicians for over 30 years. Before leading the YOC, he conducted the Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestras. Performances included: Charlotte’s Festival in the Park, Summer Pops at Symphony Park, as well as at national concert venues in Washington, DC and Charleston, SC for Piccolo Spoleto. In 2002 and 2017, Dr. Pereira conducted youth orchestra performances at Carnegie Hall in New York City.
His experience and dedication has inspired, enhanced and elevated the training of many talented student musicians throughout the Carolinas.
