Our family foursome had the privilege of experiencing Madagascar – A Musical Adventure put on by the Children’s Theater of Charlotte. This was the first musical that we have gone to as a family. I was a little nervous as my six-year old and four-year old are big squirmers and have a difficult time sitting still longer than ten minutes. As the four of us found our seats, we took time to look through the program. I love musicals so I took some time to explain to my daughter what the program is for and who will be playing the characters we’re about to see.
I wasn’t sure what to expect with this musical for kids but let me tell you, I was super impressed with how vibrant, fun and interactive it was. One of the first things you do is jump out of your seat to learn some dance moves.
The musical is sweet, as you follow the four loveable characters: Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, Gloria the Hippo and Melman the Giraffe (he’s super tall!) on an adventure of finding freedom outside of the Central Park Zoo. Marty’s birthday wish was to experience life outside of the zoo for a little bit. His friends get wrapped up in his adventure and learn a lot about friendship and living a little!
Our triumphant friends land in Madagascar where they encounter the lively group of Lemurs, led my King Julien himself. He is a hoot! The group bands together to challenge the Fossas before heading back home on the boat. And just like the movie, the penguins are a real treat – with their shenanigans to break free from the zoo and get to Antarctica to much of their dismay, is too cold to stay!
Just when you thought the musical was over, King Julien called the cast of characters back out on stage and everybody jumped out of their seats dancing to “Move It!”
I’m thrilled that this is the first musical my kids went to, I hope it sparks their love for theater. No doubt this is a show that all ages will love. I saw toddlers to teenagers and even some of the parents getting into it (me included!) I highly recommend checking out Madagascar – A Musical Adventure before it leaves May 6.
Also, the fun doesn’t stop when the show is over. Check out the Spangler Library for more books about Madagascar, as well as coloring stations and more!

Our first show as a family, and continues to be our favorite tradition, was the Nutcracker. I was unsure if my little ones would be okay sitting all the way through it, but they were positively mesmerized… just as I was as a small child. The amazement in their faces made me so happy and being able to share my own favorite childhood memory with them was just profound. Since then, I’ve tried to take them to every show that I can because I truly believe in the significance and importance of fine arts.
Thanks Christie! I hope to take my daughter to see the Nutcracker this year – I think she would enjoy it!
We have yet to take our kids to a show but I am excited for when we do! My first show was Annie at a local community playhouse and it lightened a fire under me! I love the theater. I hope at least one of my kids does too 😉

When my daughter was 4, we took her to watch Mary Poppins and it was an amazing experience. Those are still here all time favorite songs. As my son turns 4 and he is all into animals Madagascar will be a great one for him and for the family.
I went to see Beauty and the Beast performed the Uwharrie Players when I was in high school with my then boyfriend. It was probably one of my favorite plays and memories. My husband and I also went to a Reefer Madness the Musical here locally and although not child friendly..LOL..my husband and I had a great time.
