We’ve got a fun giveaway for all of you Smarty runners out there. The 7th annual AvidXchange Music Factory 5K Rock ‘N Run/Walk is coming up on August 13. It’ll features live music, vendors and raffle giveaways, as well as healthy-living information – all for a GREAT cause. We’ve got a free race registration up for grabs today!
Proceeds from the event will help low-income residents in the area, including teens and potential homebuyers, via the program initiatives of Community Dream Builders’, a Charlotte-based nonprofit that organizes the run/walk. AvidXchange, which borders this area and is sponsoring the run/walk, is an example of the type of business alliance that Community Dream Builders is trying to foster in the area, and that it relies on to carry out its mission.
Here’s the history of the race according to their Web site:
The AvidXchange Music Factory 5K Rock ‘N Run was founded from within a fragile community called Lockwood (Plymouth Avenue, Sylvania Avenue and Keswick Avenue). In the late 90’s, the Lockwood community was on the edge of gentrification, overwhelmed by drugs and prostitution – even named one of the top 25 most dangerous neighborhoods in America in 2010 by Neighborhoodscout.com. Since this news in 2010, Community Dream Builders has collaborated with organizations in the North Corridor to create programs to provide residents access to resources that will help them be successful. For example, Community Dream Builders’ “Leave It Behind” program took at-risk youth outside of the neighborhood to nearby farms for team building and counseling so they could disconnect and leave their troubled pasts behind. Right now, the organization is working on a workforce/housing program called “Shoal” that will help educate and develop homeowners (targeting human-trafficking victims and veterans). Today the organization has expanded its influence into the communities of Druid Hills, Graham Heights, Greenville, Bright Walk and Hidden Valley as well.
