Big Smarty congrats to Charlotte Lab School who was recently awarded final approval as a new charter school in North Carolina! They’ll be located uptown in First Ward – close to all of the amazing learning resources in our city like Imaginon, Discovery Place, and the Levine Museum of the New South. Imagine getting such a hands-on learning experience. We are SO excited for this new school!
Charlotte Lab School tells us that the selection process was among the most rigorous in the history of North Carolina charter schools; it is one of only 11 schools across the State (out of 71 applications), and only one of three in Mecklenburg county that was approved by a State Board of Education-appointed Charter School Advisory Board.
There are so many things that set this charter school apart, but we absolutely love its focus on diversity AND its commitment to providing an engaging, project-based, college-preparatory foundation in a small, nurturing partial language immersion setting (the school will offer Spanish and Mandarin Chinese in a partial-immersion setting beginning in kindergarten – start them young!).
Charlotte Lab School will open in the fall of 2015 with 280 students in grades K through 4. The school will ultimately grow to serve 540 students in grades k through 8.
If you’re interested in applying to Charlotte Lab School (remember charter schools are tuition-free, public schools that follow state guidelines but operate independently from local school districts), they are now accepting applications. Click here to apply. The enrollment period will conclude at 11:59pm on Friday Feb. 13th. Applications submitted during the enrollment period will be assigned a unique lottery code, and if the number of applications exceeds the number of seats available, the school will hold a public lottery to admit students Details about the lottery and admissions policy are posted on the school website.
