After years of hearing, seeing and reading the name Jackie Pace and Huntington Learning Center, I finally decided to find out who Jackie was and what Huntington Learning Center was all about. I think I had done what many people do, made some assumptions that all learning centers were the same or that my child is not getting Ds or Fs, so we have no need for a learning center or that learning centers are just for tutoring…
Ten minutes into my first meeting with Jackie Pace, I realized that this was not the case at all. Huntington Learning Center is a support tool that every child can benefit from. Open for instruction year round, Huntington offers students of all ages, kindergarten through adult, the opportunity to learn how to be the best they can be. At the root of all successful careers and school experiences is a good solid foundation in basic academic skills. That’s what students acquire at Huntington!
Let’s meet Jackie Pace, Owner of Two Huntington Learning Centers!
Jackie is a dynamic force that you trust and love within minutes of meeting her. She holds an undergraduate degree in math education from UNC and a graduate degree in Educational Administration and Supervision from Winthrop. Over the years, Jackie has taught at Charlotte Latin School, Sun Valley High School, McClintock MS, and CPCC, so her roots are Charlotte. She has owned and operated the Charlotte HLC location on Park Road since 1992 and the Huntersville location since 2001 – so she has been tracking trends in education for over 20 years. Both of her centers are two of the most successful Huntington Learning Centers in the country.
The Huntington Learning Center Student
There is no “typical” Huntington schedule or “typical” Huntington student. Many of their students are making A’s and B’s in school but their parents recognize they need to stay ahead. They know that grades are not always indicative of strong skills. Some of their students are making “C’s” and “D’s” because they fell behind years ago. And some of their students are in danger of failing and of not graduating if they do not get help. Some students are at Huntington to get help preparing for SAT and ACT testing. Some high school students are making straight A’s but have hit a rock wall in chemistry and just need chemistry assistance. They strive to get inside a student’s head and figure out how to help him maximize his strengths. End result – they build a child’s confidence and that, in turn, affects his motivation to learn.
Most students begin their Huntington journey by taking an in-depth academic assessment. From this assessment, Jackie and her team of educational experts, determine a child’s strengths and weaknesses and design a program to close the gaps. After analyzing the assessment, the centers’ directors will meet with the student’s parents and explain page by page their results. They look at this process as one in which they must connect the dots! Once they connect the dots, everything makes sense to the parents, the students, and the students’ classroom teachers. Instruction will then focus on the process, not on the product, and the child masters the skills that help them learn how to learn in all subject areas.
So, if you are like me and had preconceived notions that all learning centers are created equally or only students with bad grades have a need for a learning center or that learning centers are just for tutoring or… I encourage you to make some calls, ask a lot of questions and meet with one of the directors. You have nothing to lose and a lot to gain and summer break is a great time to do it.
