Everyone knows that good causes and Charlotteans go hand in hand. Charlotte has proven that it is full of “good cookies” by raising more $ per capita for Cookies for Kids’ Cancer than anywhere else in the US. This should come as no surprise to our Smarty audience as we’ll do anything and everything we can to help a great cause!
Beginning today and extending throughout the entire month of September, 30 local Charlotte businesses will be donating a portion of their proceeds for one given day of the month to Cookies for Kids’ Cancer, a national nonprofit dedicated to raising funds for pediatric research. This Charlotte movement was inspired by one of our ‘lil Smarty Warriors, Grier Christenbury, a first-grader who has been battling Neuroblastoma since the age of 2 1/2. Grier is currently undergoing treatment again and we would like to honor him and all of the children like him who live in our area.
Here is a quote from Grier’s mom, Amy, a Smarty Mom in my book on so many levels. She amazes me every single day:-)
’30 Days’ does not really have actual cookies… just 30 “good cookies” that are donating a % of their sales to Cookies For Kids’ Cancer each day in September during Childhood Cancer awareness month. Photographed here are Lesa Helbein, me and Grier… Lesa helps me more than I can describe with this fundraising. 46 kids a day are diagnosed with some form of pediatric cancer…. that is two full classrooms… there is no known cause or cure… It effects EVERYONE. Cookies For Kids’ Cancer is not about just one child or one type of cancer… it is about coming together and making a difference and funding trials for children so the outcome of this disease can change and kids can be kids not patients in a hospital.
Smarties, this is the second annual ’30 Days for a Cure’ event, the 4th annual bake sale will be at Blackhawk Hardware again on Dec. 4th 2011 (National Cookie Day). See calendar below for all of the awesome “Cookies” in our community. You can also check out the official Cookies for Kids Cancer Cookbook on Amazon as well as OXO’s Good Grips “Cookie” Spatula – both have proceeds going to the cause.
