Now that we have the big kids all decked out in their matchy-matchy backpack/lunchpack get-ups, it’s time to focus on the preschoolers and their lunches. And let’s face it, preschool lunch boxes can be tricky! They need to be tall and skinny and just the right size so they will fit nicely in your provided preschool book bag, which isn’t very big. Plus, when preschoolers are in the 3’s and 4’s classes, the teachers want the children to pack their book bags at the end of the day, so you want one that will easily fit. CSP has put together some Smarty-approved lunch boxes and some things to think about when outfitting your little one.
My personal fave is the Lands End SmallHaul Deluxe Lunch Sack which is now on sale for $9.50. These are eco-friendly and they are taller than most lunch bags, which is key for preschool.
Next up is the Crocodile Creek line available at amazon.com for $13.48 (eligible for free super saver shipping if you spend $25 or more) or locally at Joseph Beth and Toys & Co. Their designs are happy and groovy, my 7-year-old is OBSESSED with horses so this is the perfect lunch box for her. These bags are roomy, lead free, PVC free and slick (so the children can easily slide in book bags). Can’t beat that.
Built has a Gourmet Getaway Lunch Tote that is super hip and totally green for $22. These lunch bags are so cool that moms have been known to hijack them when the kids aren’t using!
Kids Konserve sells the full kit ‘n kaboodle with a Waste-free Lunch Kit that includes a reusable lunch sack, reusable sandwich bag, stainless steel bottle and cloth napkin. All this could be yours for $45, which is a great deal considering the cost of these items individually. These designs tend to be cuter for girls, go figure!
Laptop Lunches are what the cool kids are packing. Check these out at amazon.com. These kits include an insulated carrying case, bento containers, a perfect set of reusable utensils, and a book full of healthy lunch ideas. All for $39.99.
Pottery Barn Kids has the coveted designs for boys including Star Wars, Spiderman and Batman lunch boxes. Keep in mind, many designs are back-ordered until mid-October. But if you’ve got a die-hard, you may want to check this bag out.

I love this list, thanks, Jen! I never even thought of the tall factor on the preschool lunch boxes. We just got a note from our teacher emphasizing this.
Neela Bags has an amazing lunch tote that is tall and green!
