I’m so over thinking it’s ok to serve my kids ice cream that has 30 fat grams a serving. It seems that we all just accepted the gourmet ice cream craze that has been going on for at least a decade. What ever happened to frozen yogurt? Have you ever looked in the grocery store for frozen yogurt? You have to look hard, Smarties, because you may only find a handful of options at most. In my family, we have an ongoing tradition to have a last day of school “ice cream” cone to kick off summer. So we decided to review the new TCBY in Colony Place (Colony & Rea Roads) and promote a healthy alternative to ice cream.
TCBY did not disappoint. I couldn’t believe they had fancier flavors than the white chocolate mousse I grew up on (this is still my all-time fave frozen yogurt flavor since high school and it is 98% fat free, thank you very much!). TCBY Colony Place has a full-on swaggy yogurt bar with 10 different flavors and 35 toppings to decorate your delectable treat. You will be greeted with your own cup to start your experience. You can choose from nonfat chocolate, nonfat old-fashioned vanilla, 98% fat free white chocolate mousse, 98% fat free cheesecake, nonfat strawberry, nonfat banana, nonfat pistachio, nonfat pina colada tart and nonfat classic tart. Not only is frozen yogurt low fat and calories, but it’s also full of probiotics, Vitamin D, calcium, need I say more? You will leave feeling good about your healthy options at this dessert mecca.
Smarty tip: on my virgin voyage to the “self-serve” bar, I failed to notice the extremely large bowls that my kids each received as they walked in. And with 10 flavors to fill your bowl, that can get pretty pricey. So I would recommend that you allow your kids to pull one serving of 2-3 flavors and that should equate to 3 oz, which is a normal serving and the yogurt is $.39/oz. My twins tore through a $5.82 bowl of yogurt and they were literally bouncing off the walls! I should have intervened, but I figured it would be worse if I did. So learn from my mistake and monitor the initial yogurt amount in your bowl and you will be golden!
While chatting with the store manager, I learned that they are celebrating the last day of school today. Bring in your school id or report card TODAY from 3-6p and you will get a free cup of yogurt (limit one per student). They are also extending their store hours today until 11p to celebrate the first day of summer.
Thanks, TCBY, and Happy Summer, Smarties! Don’t forget to mention CSP when you check out so we can show them our Charlotte pink & green movement!

I can still remember my favorite was a Cookie Dough Shiver made with White Chocolate Mousse! We always went to the TCBY on the corner of Monroe Road and Sardis Road North in high school. I was so sad when it closed. You guys are lucky to have a new one open! Up here in Winston, we don't have any!
For my birthday, my mom would get me the Deep Dish Brownie frozen yogurt pie from the TCBY that used to be on Morehead beside CMC. This brings back memories! I wish the store was still there. I do buy frozen yogurt at the grocery and usually get the Ben & Jerry's Fro Yo. I'm sure it's not low in fat or calories!Ashley WK
Only complaint I have about this TCBY is that they have no cones. I much prefer my frozen yogurt in a cone than a cup.
LOVE TCBY, but there is a similar place that opened up a little closer to Piper Glen in the Trader Joe's shopping center next to Starbucks. I can't remember the name, but its the same self-serve set up, but TONS of fresh fruit options for toppings (the TCBY stuff seemed like thawed, frozen fruit).
For a more local option, support Tasty Yo! on North Davidson, next to the Crepe Cellar. Very healthy — truly frozen yogurt w/o all the sugar and lots of local, organic toppings.
Has anyone tried the new self-serve frozen yogurt place in Southpark Mall? I'd love to hear a review on that one compared to the TCBY and Piper Glen yogurt shop.
Great review – We have been meaning to get there ever since I saw it had opened.
I took my 22 month old and 3 year old recently, and we had a great time! I did monitor the amount of yogurt and toppings, but my daughter thought it was so cool that she could have her own ice cream! They have mini m&ms, which were great because a small spoon of them looked like tons!
I think the one in Southpark & in Piper Glen are both called Yo-foria. Has anyone tried them?
Man, I was so hopeful the new TCBY would be a great alternative to ice cream, but it was very dissappointing. Sure it's cute and fancy, but in the end you have a high sugar, mostly artificial sugars at that, artificial colors AND flavors and a steep price tag to go with it. Plus I really thought it tasted horrible, but I didn't load it down with all the sugary toppings either. I look forward to trying out the Tasty Yo.
OK, Smarties, you have spoken:-) I will definitely check out Yoforia in SPark Mall and Piper Glen. I was just at that PG Starbuck's on Monday and was peeking in the window of Yoforia. I could have sworn that it wasn't open yet. But I must be wrong! I also heard that a yummy new yogurt sensation is hitting town this summer, Pinkberry. Stay tuned…
I hate that all they have is those gigantic cups. They really should have smaller sizes.I mean if you filled those things even 1/2 up that is still way to much yougurt!
tasty yo is by far our favorite!! locally owned and operated in Noda and Ballantyne. they support local farmers and their spoons are biodegradable (made out of corn). i have been to all the other fro yo shops and this is by far the best!
The Yo-foria on Selwyn (same shopping center where Plantation Shop/Tennille and Co closed) is great! Lots of fresh fruit toppings, interesting flavors as well as classic ones, and of course, the option of candy toppings. Also sold by weight and topping stations are high enough that parents will need to help younger kids (a plus in my book.) I too am glad that frozen yogurt is back!! It at least feels healthier than Ben and J's. Yoforia says it is all organic too, I believe.
It's great to eat healthy, watch sugar, etc etc, but sometimes I just want a big ol' glob of ice cream and I am gonna have it! My kids, too! 🙂
The flavors at TCBY rotate so each day is new flavors.
Went to Tasty-Yo with my kids this afternoon. I really liked it….but they did not! The flavors were blueberry and plain…I got the swirl with granola on top…very good. You can choose 3 toppings and the "kids" size for $3 was plenty. I thought mine tasted better than what my kids got with the sugary toppings. Only go if your kids like frozen yogurt!!!
Yoforia only has 8 yogurt flavors and they NEVER change. Three cheers for the return of TCBY and the fruit sorbets!!! (Oh, how I have missed those sorbets!)
