Register now for one of the most fun races in town – the Down Syndrome of Greater Charlotte’s 4th annual 3-2-1 Dash for Down Syndrome. This race benefits some EXTRA special people in our community with an EXTRA finish line. The race has one 5k finish line and another one .11 miles later (just for fun!). Why the two finish lines? It’s race organizers’ way of making people aware that those with Down syndrome only have one 1 extra chromosome. Most people have 2 copies of 23 different chromosomes but those with Down syndrome are born with 3 copies of the 21st chromosome (the medical term for this is Trisomy 21). So for awareness and support, they added to their 5K (3.1 miles) run a short DASH (0.11 mile) for Down syndrome for a total distance of 3.21 miles. (Race organizers say your official time will be captured at the 5K finish line; the DASH is just for fun!)
Event proceeds benefit education programs for children and adults with Down syndrome through the Down Syndrome Association of Great Charlotte. These programs help student reach their full potentials.
Here’s a sweet video from the 321 Dash in 2014
