Why did the assassination of the Austro-Hungarian crown prince in 1914 plunge Europe—and eventually the world—into four years of unprecedented violence? What motivated European governments to join the first total war of the twentieth century? This lecture will focus on outlining why an isolated incident of domestic terrorism exploded into a lengthy, industrialized conflict that transformed global politics and re-drew national boundaries and which continues to haunt Europeans today.
