Smarty Mom Podcast: Katie Robbins

I am so thrilled to introduce you to this week’s Smarty mom, Katie Robbins, who was brave enough to be our first Smarty mom PODCAST! Yep, you heard that right. We’re branching into the world of podcasts for some of our Smarty moms and couldn’t be more thrilled that Katie agreed to be our guinea pig :-). We teamed up with our podcast peeps, Matt & Ramona from 107.9 The Link, to record this empowering interview with Katie, a breast cancer SURVIVOR, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. katie-at-race-for-the-cure

I had heard Katie’s story over the last year from our friends at Charlotte Radiology, but when I spoke with Katie myself over the phone one morning, I was so struck by her story that I immediately called Charlotte Radiology to book my first mammogram. Although I’m not quite 40, my doc had asked me two years ago to get a baseline mammogram, and I kept putting it off – I’d make the appointment and cancel the day before because something “came up.” Listening to Katie’s story forced me to make the appointment and KEEP it. Why I kept putting it off is beyond me. It’s a quick and relatively painless appointment (waaaaaay better than a Pap smear, ladies!), and I’m happy to say my scan was clear. I’m so thankful to Katie for being the swift kick in the tail that I needed.

I hope listening to her story prompts YOU to talk to your doctor, make your mammogram appointment, or do a breast self check. Katie is a ball of fire with a story to tell. So, put on your ear buds, fold some laundry, cook dinner, or go for a run, and listen to this amazing Smarty mama in her own words. We’ve also included, in true Smarty Mom fashion, her vitals and local faves just to you can get to know her a little bit better. :-)

Matt & Ramona want to hear from YOU on Mommy Issues Monday TODAY!

The topic today is “What went wrong when you were traveling with kids?” Leave a comment below or go to our facebook page and join the discussion. Let’s show Charlotte how Smarty you are! Your comment may be the one read on air with Matt & Ramona! Even better, call in on Monday!

Here’s my answer.

Family beach trips with my in-laws have spelled D-I-S-A-S-T-E-R ever since my first born was little. Year 1: she wouldn’t sleep – WOULD NOT sleep – in the Pack n Play. I was 8 months pregnant with #2 so after a couple of nights of no sleep, we packed ourselves right up at midnight and drove all the way home. Of course she slept great the whole ride home and went right to sleep in her own crib. We went to the doctor the next day because surely she had an ear infection or something? Nope, the doc’s diagnosis: separation anxiety…what?!?! Weak diagnosis in my opinion but who knows what goes on in a 13-month-old’s head! Year 2: Ear infections. Year 3: I’m pregnant with Baby #3 and we ALL get a horrific stomach bug. EVERYONE. It took a while for us to live that one down because who else would’ve brought the stomach bug to infect to the rest of the family but the ones with the little kids? Year 4: Baby gets a double ear infection and the older two get Hand, Foot, and Mouth. Yes, Hand, Foot, and Mouth. That horrible high fever and mouth ulcers that causes 2 and 3 year olds to wail every time something hits their lips. Our Urgent Care bill was like a mortgage payment that year because we were out of network.

On a positive note: I learned one trick to keep my sanity – boxed wine (the good Target stuff) and Solo cups – no one ever knows how much you’re drinking!

Matt & Ramona want to hear from you on Mommy Issues Monday tomorrow!

The topic tomorrow is “what does your child do that you know you shouldn’t laugh at (because it’s inappropriate or rude, etc.), but you can’t help it?” Leave a comment below or go to our facebook page and join the discussion. Let’s show Charlotte how Smarty you are! Your comment may be the one read on air with Matt & Ramona! Even better, call in on Monday!

Here’s my answer. I have the cutest, petite-est, ballerina for a daughter. You’d think she would be dainty, girly, fancy – from the outside, you’d think she was all GIRL. In reality, she’s just like one of the boys who is OBSESSED with bodily functions, particularly tooting, ok, FARTING. It pains me to type this about my girl! Since she was a toddler, she was the first in any conversation to talk about poop, toots & farts. Uggh, it’s gross to even type that word. But every time that cute little thing talks about it at the most inappropriate times like church, Nordstrom’s, or anywhere that suits her fancy, her laugh is so infectious that you just have to go along with it. Her most recent was she was picking out a birthday present for her bestie who is also a girly-girl who isn’t afraid to toot, she found the funniest present ever in her mind. It was a rubber brain and when you squeezed it, a big fart came out – yup, it was a rubber brain fart. That was the only thing she wanted to buy for the dance party birthday. Mom put the kabash on that and we brought a cute fluffy stuffed puppy instead. Enough with the potty talk, let’s talk about something more girly, like shoes.

Matt & Ramona “Mommy Issues Monday” for CSP Readers!

The topic next week, Monday, 10/31/11, is “How did you cure your child of a bad habit?” Leave a comment below or go to our facebook page and join the discussion. Let’s show Charlotte how Smarty you are! Your comment may be the one read on air with Matt & Ramona! Even better, call in on Monday!

So here’s my answer to that question.

Two of my three kids were paci users. For my oldest son, his was crack! We had to fan 6 around his head at night, he hid them around the house and we had extras packed away. When he was three, I decided that when we returned home from preschool, his paci would have moved away to live with a little boy because he had become a big boy. A few tears but it worked – pat mom on the back, I am so great, in tune with my kid, all is right in the world… Until, he started sucking his finger! I put up with that nasty, wrinkly finger for another two years before having our dentist fit him with a “cage” that prevented him from sucking his finger. Worked and he is now 11 with no paci or finger sucking.

My youngest, I finally just got fed up one day, no cute story just the paci was gone and that was that!

OK, TAG, YOU’RE IT!!

Matt & Ramona “Mommy Issues Monday” for CSP Readers!

The topic next week, Monday, 10/24/11, is “tell us about the time you felt like a crappy parent!” (these are Matt’s words exactly:-) We would love for Y-O-U to be part of the discussion each and every week! Leave your comments below and I will read them off during the interview. Even better, call in on Monday!

So here’s my answer to that question.

This happens pretty much every other day in my house. On reprimanding an identical twin:

Me: Owen, I’ve asked you a thousand times, stop running through the house like a banshee, if you need to run GO OUTSIDE!
Owen: Umm, mommy, that’s Walker.
Walker: Smiling in silence enjoying his victory.

How can I expect my discipline efforts to work if I don’t even know who my child is? This null and voids the attempt. Score: Mom – a big fat ZERO, twins – one, and counting. And I feel like a total loser mom every single time.

OK, TAG, YOU’RE IT!!

It’s Matt & Ramona’s “Mommy Issues Monday” Topic for CSP Readers!

This Monday, 10/17/11, will be our fourth week leading Matt & Ramona’s “Mommy Issues Monday”. The topic next week is “What is the worst activity you have done with your child?” We would love for Y-O-U to be part of the discussion each and every week! Leave your comments below and I will read them off during the interview. Even better, call in on Monday!

So here’s my answer to that question.

Taking four kids under the age of 10 to Carowinds with one or two parents. Don’t get me wrong, we LOVE us some Carowinds! But with three kids who are the exact same size, and let’s face it, size is KING in Carowinds, you can get yourself in quite a pickle. Three of my four were 40″ this summer. The minimum height to all the cool rides is 42″. We snuck on the Woodstock Express, but other than that, it was Planet Snoopy or bust for this thrill-seeking fam. I might as well have strapped on diapers, my kids were so frustrated. We couldn’t even ride Woodstock’s gliders b/c we had THREE who didn’t meet the height requirement – two parents vs three kids = no fun. Not happy that we got suckered into that family pass that cost a small fortune – huge waste for us this year.

Maybe next year, we’ll grow 8 inches!

OK, TAG, YOU’RE IT!!
