Fitness Friday: January Blues

januaryThe first step is the hardest. Right? Always. We were in our house for over 6 years before we actually did any of the major remodeling projects on our very long list. In year 2, we had actual plans drawn for a kitchen remodel and we interviewed many firms to do the design/build. But…we just couldn’t pull the trigger for over 4 years! We were stuck. Once we actually took the first step and completed the kitchen, it was on. We completed every remodel project on that list, one by one.

Fitness and getting into shape is the same in my mind. It’s the first step that’s the hardest… showing up that first time.

Get out of your own way. You are the only person in your way.  Being healthy is hard and not liking what you see in the mirror is hard, so PICK YOUR HARD.

Our friends at Carolina Barre & Core have a swingin’ special deal for you. It’s called the Introductory Special. If you need to dip your toe into the water because you are afraid of commitment, then you gotta check this out.

Introductory Special – here’s how it goes:
For $50, you get 2 weeks (that’s 14 days!) of unlimited classes. You could technically come everyday and that is $3.57 a class, people.  Commit to coming 5 times in that 14 day period AND you get a $50 discount off of any package you buy!

Spending money on fitness is an investment in Y-O-U. Try CBC– we know you will LOVE it!

Fitness Friday: Carolina Barre & Core for Christmas!

img_1139_2My sweet children have asked me a thousand times what I want for Christmas. I’m very encouraged by this because it means that their father/my husband must be behind it.

I’m fairly decent at buying gifts for others (except for high school and college age – see solution below! yay!). However, when someone asks me what I want – I totally freeze up. I can’t think of one single thing.

If a family member, child, in-law, significant other, or stranger on the street is asking you what you want for Christmas then why not a gift certificate for an exercise studio you’ve been meaning to try?

Have you wanted to try Carolina Barre & Core but it just never makes it into your schedule? If you are anything like me then you are a creature of habit and have very good intentions (and the road to hell is paved with ’em).

I will be the first to make up an excuse to skip a workout; I have an accountability issue and group exercise at Carolina Barre & Core keeps me accountable. And the fact that the workouts produce results keeps me committed!

Man oh man – buying for the high school and college set is super tough – I have a permanent seat on the struggle bus because I can never figure out what to get them for their birthdays and Christmas.  Look no further because our barre besties at Carolina Barre & Core have a solution with their special student rate pricing! Students get more barre bang for their buck!

Get that favorite student in your life a 5 class pass for $60 or 1 month unlimited for $100.  What an amazing gift for the students in your life who live in the Charlotte and Raleigh areas!

And the next time someone asks what YOU want, send them over to the Carolina Barre & Core studio on Selwyn in Charlotte or in Lafayette Village in Raleigh so that you can reap the benefits of the gift that keeps on giving!   Happy happy merry everything!

Fitness Friday: Carolina Barre & Core ~ Spotlight on Nance Levin

nance-e1455810583490-189x180Nance (pronounced NanCEY) has been making us sweat and sculpting our muscles since Carolina Barre & Core opened its doors.

Originally from Baltimore, this UNC-Chapel Hill grad teaches both the traditional barre class known as “barre fusion” and the heart-pumping, sweat-inducing half cardio/half barre class “30/30”. Nance brings lots of sass to every class she teaches.

Even though you are in a class with others, it feels like Nance is like your own personal coach who is 100% focused on making your butt tight, your stomach flat AND your thighs/arms jiggle-free. She knows exactly what most of us want in our end game (tight butt, flat stomach, jiggle-free thighs/arms) and she serves up a combination of moves that gets you there, period.

CBC BicepsIn 30/30, the first 30 minutes is cardio, using bodyweight and free weights, with each “section” interspersed with “runs” in the form of mountain climbers. You start with 3 sets of 3 mountain climbers and your work up to 11 sets of 11 (or 12 sets of 12 if Nance is in a super good mood!) This part of the class is a high intensity, full body workout that combines interval training with strength building to get your heart rate UP.

CBC Barre WorkThe second 30 minutes hones in on thighs/glutes/abs. You do 2 thigh exercises at the barre (instead of the 4 in the barre fusion class), 1 set of glute exercises and you finish up with an “ab-intensive” (you are doing ab work the entire class if you’re doing the class correctly however the last part is 100% abs).

I ADORE her and I know that she is going to work me out from top to bottom. She is a legend with a cadre of devotees, who are “boss” themselves, and can always be found in her class.

Take it from her squad – here’s what they had to say about Nance:

“Since day one (1.5 years ago when I blindly walked into a 30/30 class), Nance has been so motivating, encouraging and extremely inspirational!  Whether it’s her barre or 30/30 class, I can always count on a challenging, awesome workout with humor that is on point!” Lisa Castleman

“Nance is an inspiration! She peppers her classes with humor that gets us laughing in the midst of an intense workout. She’s part of what makes CBC so special: results without judgment!  Outside of class, I hear Nance’s voice saying: ‘abs in tight – all day and night!’.  And, I pull in my abs! Recently, my husband started taking Nance’s 30/30 class and he says there is no better workout; he’s hooked, too!” Cortney Nauck

“Nance motivates me to give 100% in each class because she leads by example. Plus, she’ll make me laugh while my abs are killing me in the middle of her workout. Her ‘tough love’ approach works!” Tisha Bass

Fitness Friday: My Story ~ Carolina Barre & Core

kristenrichardsWritten by:  Kristen Richards

I have been a runner for the last 25+ years.  I love everything about it.  The cardio, the scenery, the solitude, the camaraderie of a group run, training for a race, running in relays, etc.

A few years ago, I branched out and started “seeing other people” and FiA became my new fitness boyfriend.  FiA is a free, women-only, peer-led workout group with locations across both Carolinas. (check out FiA Charlotte Metro workout schedule)  In FiA, I found a great workout with like-minded gals.  Plus, the variety of bootcamps and strength training were a great complement to my first love, running.

So, one day I was WALKING across a parking lot (after a run) to get coffee and tripped and fell.   Two inconclusive x-rays later, my diagnosis was a 2nd degree sprain and a “maybe” fractured Fibula (the dainty calf bone running from back of knee to ankle).  It is not lost on me that I injured myself WALKING.   I was put in a boot and told that this thing would heal itself if I avoided any “pounding” exercises (think running and FiA) for 6 weeks.

IMG_6455.JPGI was in a straight up panic because I was on one of the FiA Palmetto 70 relay teams and slated to run 18 miles the week after my recovery time was over.  I had to come up with some other plan to keep fit during this hiatus without any “pounding”.  Enter Carolina Barre & Core.

At Carolina Barre & Core, I told the instructors about my injury and each was knowledgeable and super helpful in offering modifications (being up on my toes with my gimpy foot was a no-go during those first few classes).

The classes are very challenging and I found myself sore all over.  I was so surprised at how much I could sweat by not moving more than an inch at a time.  With each class, I saw real progress with my flexibility and felt my ankle strengthening.  As a runner, I definitely don’t stretch enough and probably neglect my hips. I like how the classes include hip flexor and other amazing stretches between the exercises.

The core work is no joke and just not something any of us does enough of, in my opinion. It has been energizing to mix it up and I’ve enjoyed keeping Carolina Barre & Core as part of my fitness regimen, even though my ankle has been back to normal for months!

So, take it from this running and cardio junkie – try it – you can’t go wrong.  And I never thought I’d say it but maybe I’LL SEE YOU AT THE BARRE!

Fitness Friday: Carolina Barre & Core: No Excuses!

Carolina Barre Core 9

Now that summer is over, and we are nearly a month back into the grind…screaming at people to get outta bed, packing lunches, crying over homework, screaming at people to go to bed…starting and ending the day with screaming…ABY…always be yellin’.

How about giving something to yourself so that you can better tolerate this nonsense?

Lord have mercy, we can come up with some excuses not to exercise. Ummm…I can’t exercise because…
I need to organize my sock drawer…again.
I need to surf the interwebs to buy clothes I don’t need.
I need to pin these workouts I won’t ever do.
I need to pop-in to Home Goods/Target/World Market to buy stuff my house doesn’t need.

What we ‘need’ to do is to exercise!

This fall, try to schedule your workout just like you schedule a haircut, a doctor appointment, a business meeting, a play date, etc.

Now, don’t get crazy and be all “I’m gonna exercise everyday”. Because when you don’t, you will get depressed. And you’re all like “I can’t hack it so I’m gonna eat this pint of Talenti Gelato and now I feel sick to my stomach from the sugar so now I need some Doritos”. Slippery slope, people! Read More →

Join the September Challenge at Carolina Barre & Core

cbc_sept

Summer is over and we are back into the grind. Does it look something like this at your house? Screaming ‘get outta bed’, packing lunches, crying over homework, screaming ‘go to bed’ and starting/ending the day with yelling, which we lovingly refer to as ABY=always be yellin’.

Well, our friends at Carolina Barre & Core challenge you to take 12 classes in September so you can better tolerate this nonsense. There will be lots of prizes and surprises throughout the month so be sure to follow CBC on social media for updates. They will also be doing special social media giveaways throughout the month. Take photos of you at the barre, check-in or just give us a progress update on your 12 class in 30 days using #CBCinSept to be entered to win!  Track your progress in the studio with the sign-up board in the back of the studio and check off your classes.

Carolina Barre & Core has a class time for every schedule so go ahead, we dare you to say “I don’t have time”.
>5:30AM – If you are a rooster, then get on up and get moving. You can be home before your husband goes to work (and in time to help with kiddos because he’s helpless) or if you’re a working gal, you’ll be home in time to get yourself ready to bring home the bacon.
>6:45AM – If you’d rather die than get up when it starts with a 4 or 5, then try 6:45AM. Tell yourself you can wake up and workout twice a week at this time (you know you can).
>8:30AM – Kids have an early school start? Come workout right after! Go straight from carpool. Sure, you might sit in the parking lot for 30 minutes but everyone needs to catch up on the “news” on your People mag app or E! online.
>9:45AM, 11AM, 12PM – Still in pre-school jail or have a late school start? Plenty of times available! Do it.
>11AM or 12PM – Working gal? Go during the day. I know this is hard to wrap your head around because perhaps when you’re at work, you’re in the “at work” mode and working out is just not a part of the brain pattern. Just try it once. Yes, you might get sweaty but hey, at least you exercised, and that’s what laundry and showers are for!
>4:30PM, 5:45PM, 7PM – Okay, I get it. You can’t get it done in the time slots above. Well, there’s a class for that excuse!

There are also many class times on Saturday and Sunday.  No excuses. You can do this.  Ever wanted to try a different class type?  On Saturdays at 10:30AM, CBC offers “wild card” so shake it up and try something new.
