Have you ever met someone that you instantly click with? That’s Melissa. We met a little over a year ago and I don’t think a day has gone by that we have not communicated in some form of another. At first, we were two moms new to Charlotte seeking out friends for our little ones to play with. Our friendship has developed into something so much more. She is an amazing mom, wonderful friend and so much fun to be around. Her personality is like sunshine. She brings the good in everything. I feel like I have known her my whole life. She is the sister I never had.
Smarties, after you read this interview you are going to want to be friends with her, too. I am honored to introduce my friend, this week’s Smarty Mom: Melissa Miller.

Children’s Theatre of Charlotte’s newest production, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever the Musical is the PERFECT way to get you into the holiday spirit. It’s a musical the entire family can enjoy. Moms and dads will connect with characters that will remind them from someone in their past.
Me, it was the Bradley family. My younger brother could have been Charlie – standing up to the Heardmans, bragging about Sunday school, not realizing what he was saying (I don’t want to give away too many details). Me, I was Beth. Standing up for my mom, believing in my mom, being swayed by the true spirit of Christmas. My mom was Grace Bradley, “Amazing Grace,” the fair and objective mom. The mom who is empathetic to others’ feelings.
For my husband, it was the Herdmans. He attended Catholic grade school where he learned to become an alter boy. He vividly remembers a family where the boys used to steal from the donation plate and sneak behind the alter and drink the wine.
For your kids, they will enjoy seeing all the children perform. My boys laughed and laughed and laughed. They also left with a lot of questions. Good questions. Thought provoking questions. The Heardmans opened their eyes to a new perspective. A perspective that made more sense to them…. again, I do not want to give away too many details.
We all have stories that connect us to Christmas. This musical reminds us of our memories. It also reminds us of the true spirit of Christmas and this holiday season.
We have a Smarty Surprise! The Best Christmas Pageant Ever the Musical is selling out fast and our friends at Children’s Theatre of Charlotte have secured us 2 seats to attend any show this weekend.

Margie Eades. What is it about her that makes her so SMARTY? She is real. She is honest. She is kind. She is thoughtful. She is empathetic. She is heartfelt. She listens. Presidential Performance! Star-Spangled Singing! Official-ly Outstanding!
Children’s Theatre of Charlotte, you outdid yourself with this musical! I am not even sure if I am going to be able to put into words how A+MAZING it is. You even had my husband captivated. It is a MUST see.
Smarties, stop what you are doing, click on the link and purchase tickets. It is that good. Standing ovation good. My twins are still talking about it. They learned so much on opening night. What an amazing teaching tool! If this was out during my time as a fourth-grade teacher – this would be our field trip. TEACHERS, IF YOU ARE READING THIS — THIS SHOULD BE YOUR FIELD TRIP. The entire audience was engaged from start to finish. I loved seeing all the children’s faces during the campaigning scenes. It was so much fun. We all left with an overwhelming sense of happiness that the best person for the job was elected. You could hear the kids all talking and cheering for Grace as they exited the theatre. Another thing, we all left with a full understanding of the electoral college. Do you know how many years it has taken me to understand the electoral college? I even campaigned for a presidential nominee and worked in Washington, DC for a Senator and it wasn’t until last Friday night that I can finally say, “I get it!” Read More →

Smarties, the Children’s Theatre of Charlotte newest production, the world premiere of Grace for President, is coming to town. The timing couldn’t be any more perfect with the upcoming presidential election. If you ever wanted to teach your children about the Electoral College, government, democracy…. This is for you!
Check out these book reviews…
“DiPucchio and Pham are game gals. Explaining the electoral system to adults isn’t easy, but they made it understandable to kids.”
“…the book delivers lessons on electoral votes, polls and the reason every vote counts.”
-New York Times
If these are the book reviews, can you imagine how amazing the CTC’s performance is going to be? They are masterful on bringing stories to life. I am super excited! Read More →
This season opening was TOAD-ally FROG-tastic! Smarties, get your calendars out and set a date. This is a must see with your little ones.
This year’s season at the Children’s Theatre of Charlotte centers around the theme of community and acceptance. A Year with Frog and Toad was the perfect season opener. It celebrates best friends that couldn’t be more different than each other. Frog is the easy going, friendly, happy go lucky friend. Toad is the cranky, grumpy, more complacent friend. Their personalities balance each other perfectly! The audience gets a glimpse of how their friendship grows as they are confronted with different situations that take place during the different seasons throughout the year. I could give you more detail — but I do not want to give away the charm of this adorable musical! It is a must see, I promise! The cast and crew are amazing. My little smarty crew’s eyes were glued to the stage from start to finish.
Make it a Smarty adventure. Get tickets to an afternoon or evening show. Take the Light Rail. Last stop and you are there! Grab a bite, explore Imaginon and catch the play. We did — and it was tooooo much fun! Two Smarty Moms and 6 little smarties –4 girls ranging from 2nd to 5th grade & 2 preschool age boys. It was the perfect evening. Read More →

Smarties, if you haven’t met Sonya Alexis. You are missing out. I was recently introduced to her through another friend and I am never looking back. I am almost afraid to introduce her to you because I might never get an appointment — SHE IS THAT GOOD! Celebrity Stylist GOOD! During our interview, she styled my hair in beach waves, introduced me to several products and taught me how to apply easy summer make-up. She took me out of my comfort zone with a cute summer side low ponytail with cascading waves. We had the best time! I left the interview feeling like a million dollars.
Not only is she a magician with hair, she is an amazing mother. She has an amazing personality and her artistic talent is beyond anything I have ever seen. I was mesmerized by the information she provided. I could go on and on…needless to say, everything she showed me I ended up running out and buying (if it wasn’t already for sale in her salon). My hair stayed wavy for 3 days. This is amazing to me for two reasons: 1) it rained really hard the night she did it; 2.) my hair is super thick and does not hold a curl EVER (until Sonya!)
